Satsuki was from Kyoto, the most famous pupil of Tomioka Tessai, early C20. This painting is beautifully painted with black and plum colours, perfectly combining strength and delicacy in the technique and in the subject matter. Three(3) Japanese Hina Dolls, Meiji period, 9 1/4" to 6 1/4" high, 4 3/4" to 5 1/2" wide, 3" deep, with humorous face expressions were very well executed, carved out of the wood and lacquered, all have glass eyes. Each guys wearing silk garment and hat. Three(3) pieces of accessories came with doll set and the condition is good except silk garments are stained slightly with age and one(1) hat has loose rope.

DESCRIPTION: An antique hand-painted ceremonial drum with vivid motifs of large flowers with curling green tendrils against a red ground. Both ends of the drum are covered in animal hide and secured with round-headed metal studs. This highly decorative drum makes a perfect little end table, or adds a touch of exotic to any décor. Very good condition with minor rubbing in spots. DIMENSIONS: 16 5/8” high (42.2 cm) x 15 5/8” diameter (39.6 cm).

Chinese antique small display shelf with stand, made of hong-mu. A staggered shelf in the middle breaks up the square area. The front and sides of the unit is carved with delicate lined details and cusped edges. On each side of both the top and bottom shelf is a little window (four total) and the back is open. The underside of the base has a black lacquer panel painted with a butterfly and chrysanthemums.

The rarer Katsinas of the some of the Rio Grande Pueblos are stylistically similar to Hopi figures, though often made of pine wood. Hopi Katsinas are made of cottonwood and more simply painted. This doll has great provenance: Dorothy Louise Luhrs, PhD. She taught at UNM School of Field Research. She was born in 1910 and she died in 1972. This doll was purchased from her estate and sold by Case Auctions, Memphis, Tennessee.
