This is the finest miniature Olmec jade maskette that I have ever seen. The beard is a particularly noteworthy feature. Many bearded figures are known from the Olmec culture and are seen on a variety of media. It measures only 1 1/2" long. It is mildly scooped in the back. Found in a dig in Veracruz, Mexico in 1966. Although just a fragment, the imagery is outstanding in this substantial gray pottery piece. Molded and carved, it depicts two seated chieftains facing one another over a table (?) resting on a skull. The imagery is crisp and clear. The piece measures 6" X 2-5/8", while the image itself is 4" in width by 1-3/4". Dating to the 5th - 8th century AD.
