Serapis was an Egyptian god whose devotees united the worship of the Apis bull and the god Osiris. His cult, which originated at Memphis, rose to its greatest significance at Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I.

A finely engraved Hyksos scarab, 17th.-16th. cent. BC.

The scarab is engraved with robe pattern in the center and with other hieroglyphs to each side, untranslated.

The seat of power of the Hyksos kings was the city of Avaris in the Nile Delta, from where they ruled over Lower Egypt and Middle Egypt up to Cusae.

Size: 19 x 13,5 mm.

Condition: Nice Very fine and completely intact with remnants of torquise glaze in the devices.

The winged scarab was also a common motif on mummy masks and coffins, representing rebirth. Along with the 4 Sons of Horus, it too would have been placed on the beaded netting, usually placed over the heart.
