Mid-19th century wooden netsuke of a rat catcher trying to trap a rat on top of goban (Go board) with a box, but his charge escaping and climbing on the clothes of the man. Netsuke in fine-grained wood representing a toad. The sculpture is powerful, the animal is very well represented, the movements of the body and the volumes are perfect. The eyes are encrusted with a very beautiful blond horn striped with brown for the most beautiful effect. Signature of the artist below. I haven't researched the name, but I can do it on request. Edo period. Himotoshi 2 holes. Good condition, excellent patina. No restaure. Usual wear for a century-old wood. Length about 6cm.

In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness...

19th century netsuke of widely smiling Okame enveloped in her robe and holding a large wooden spoon in her hands, with a removable round bottom revealing the shunga part of the netsuke. Excellent carving, especially the face with its wide smile, wonderful flow of her robe. The dots on her forehead are inlaid with brown horn. 19th century netsuke carved as a group of four seals - two of simpler shapes, one in a shape of a natural lotus flower stem (the stem serving as himotoshi), and one with shishi finial. Elegant design in Japanese taste, bottoms are carved with raised and sunken characters in seall script and stained to resemble real seals - one of them could be a signature of the carver. Possibly made for a silk merchant - the seals resemble actual chops used for stamping silks...

18th century stag antler netsuke of Kan no Koso with a long sword in one hand and a severed head of the slain dragon in the other. Kan no Koso is the Japanese name for Liu Bang, the founder and first emperor (Gaozu) of the Han Dynasty. Very strong early carving, great depiction of of his severe face, graceful flow to the lines of his robe, superb wear and patina...
