This is Noshime used in a district for the Meiji period. This is woven with silk and cotton. The line of the part of the waist is drawn on this freely by hand. This has several places of changes of color of the aging, but does not stand out. This does not have damage. This is Kyougen clothes used in a local side. Beautiful art work of Tosa Mitsutoki* embroidered with a theme from the Noh play "Takasago" on an antique fukusa, a Japanese gift cover. The signature, seal and other characters are embroidered. To find a signature on a fukusa from this period (late Edo) is very rare; in fact, I have never seen one. The characters (at the bottom left side) read "e-dokoro azukari" which is the title for the head of the Imperial Painting Bureau...

Daimyo hikeshi shozoku: Samurai firefighter's wool jacket with a silk velvet collar; the crest and design are couched with gold leaf thread (wrapped around silk thread), chest protector and belt. Excellent, clean condition with some holes and damages in velvet collar. Late Edo period (1603-1868), 50" wide x 39" long, Chest protector, 25 1/4" long.

Dochugi made of kudzu fiber for wefts and cotton yarn for warps. Dochugi is a kind of haori worn over kimono and kudzu-fu one is worn in summer. Kudzufu has been produced mainly in Kakegawa in Shizuoka prefecture since 13th century. It was used for hakama (pants), kamishimo and dochugi. The collar and one of straps of this dochugi are replaced. straps have damages and several pin holes in the back and a cut (3cm) in front. It has a slit for a sword in the left side...

This is the kimono which the child of a rich merchant's family wore for Edo period. This is dyed in local Yuzen dyer. Basics are dyed by 80% in Tsutsugaki, and be colored in a freehand drawing successively, and this is added. The Yuzen dyeing is very rare with the kimono for children. This is cotton Haori used in Kyoto for Edo period. As for this, the surface side is a stripe pattern, and the inside is Katazome- dyeing. The inside Katazome dyeing is a design of the grain of wood. Fires were common in Japanese urban areas due to the dense population as well as construction material (primarily wood and paper). Fire brigades were made up of samurai class (buke hikeshi) as well as common class (machi hikeshi). Their primary goal in containing a fire was to tear down the surrounding buildings so the fire had no more fuel...

This picture does one of the famous programs of Kabuki in a motif. The cotton is spun by hand. And it is slightly thick. This has several places of fading and tears.
