DESCRIPTION: A pair of polychrome figures engaged in joyful dance, one male and one female, mounted on display stands. These colorful hand carved figures, called "Nats" or nature spirits, are dressed in traditional Thai costumes with the male figure wearing a tiger head cap. Prior to the advent of Buddhism, the Thai people were animists who worshipped a series of nature spirits called Nats. Later these were incorporated into Buddhism and often Nat statues will be found in Buddhist temples...

Burmese puppet head was mainly used in the puppet show. The string on top of the head can be pulled up to slide the tongue in and out of puppet's mouth. Due to the heavily used of puppets, the body and costumes are no longer survived.

A lovely wood carving of a pair from Bali. Meticulously carved and painted, the man with keris and the woman holding an offering, standing on a base. Condition: the base with some cracks and a small loss, the hilt of the keris glued, paint with few losses and wear. Dimension: c. 27 cm high.

Nats are spirits were historic characters that became deified or associated with places and elements of nature. Their veneration predates the acceptance of Buddhism but eventually was absorbed into mainstream Burmese Theravada Buddhism. H: 22cm. there are few shallow scuffs but otherwise good condition...
