Charming bronze figure of the reclining Buddha. This stage depicting the death of his body and his attainment of the realm of his true self and ultimate enlightenment is called Mahaparinirvana. He is beautifully sculpted with an expression of peace and his body is relaxed. Wonderful attention to detail and overall very pleasing form. Thailand. c.1900.

The carving is rendered in gilding and black lacquer over carved hardwood, with shell inserts for the eyes, typical for the better quality Mandalay era pieces. Overall, the piece is very nicely executed with good expressiveness and presence, making it very suitable for part of a shrine ensemble, or simply for display as a centerpiece on its own...

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a very good 18th century gilded bronze Thai buddha, seated in bhumisparsa mudra, gilded lacquer over bronze with interesting glass inserts to the base, and all the indicia of legitimate age and genuineness.
Size and Condition: 13 inches tall, 8 1/2 inches wide. There is obvious age-related wear to the gilding and some lacquer has flaked off in a few random places, but in small amounts...
A carved wooden mask from Indonesia depicting a deity or a spirit. The mask contains some pigment that once covered the surface. Topengs are used on the islands of Java and Bali and used during religious processions and ceremonies depicting the stories of the Hindu gods. Splendid Lanna Thai Wooden Buddha with original gilding seated on an elaborately decorated throne. Very serene/calm expression. The Buddha is seated in the Vajrasana position with the right hand in the gesture of touching the Earth (bhumisparsa mudra) and the left hand rests in the gesture of meditation (dhyana mudra).
Fine and rare example of Northern Thai Buddhist art which displays an elegant smartness and is well proportioned. Excellent condition and beautiful patina, no restorations...
