Large Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Saddled Horse with Oxford TL Test

This impressive pottery horse was made during the latter part of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It is made from a buff-coloured pottery and is quite "heavily-potted". Its surface has been cold-painted in a creamy-white pigment, good traces of which still remain. The horse stands upright and alert. On its back is a large integral saddle.

Description: One elegant elm bowl or water pot was from Changsha kiln of Tang Dynasty. By a very rare type of glazing of iron-greenish mottles amid straw-glazed slip on top and around the mouth rim, the water pot was finely molded with characteristic flat bottom. In a chalk-feel quality, the body clay was left with obvious molding scars and was adhered with excavation mud. Slight incursion was occurred to the glaze and was yielded in a whitish look. This extremely rare pottery model of a saddled horse was made during the Northern Dynasties period (AD 386 - 581). It is rather naively modelled from a dense grey pottery that is fairly high-fired. A Beautifully carved tube shaped jade. It is hard to date this piece and say that it is from the Hongshan period (3000BC). It is most likely from a later period as these item are extremely rare. Large Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Sheep Jar

This large and unusual pottery vessel in the form of a recumbent ram was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It has a thick cylindrical neck on its back quite a wide opening. Possible this vessel was used as base for the pole of a banner or screen support. Traces of the original "cold painted" coloured pigments can be seen.

A Han Dynasty terra cotta horse head with a very animated expression. The pottery horse which symbolises speed and perseverance are buried along with the dead royalty and generals as funeary objects. It is a status symbol to be buried with pottery horses and horse head. The horse head is painted with white slip paint with red paint showing as the harness on the horse head.

The horse head has abrasion, wear and tear due to the long period of burial. Otherwise it is in good condition.
