Like an aged boxer, the squat muscular crab takes a stance of readiness, one claw up prepared to defend against a coming attacker. This little fellow is unusual in that it is made of thick bronze, with each joint pinned in a way that allows for some mobility. This pair of Japanese handmade long square cut nails are 5" long and appear to have never been used. The nail heads are solid and shaped into a hemisphere. The silver colored decorative metal escutcheons have scalloped edges and markings to represent a flower. Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood.

This old Japanese hook would have been suspended over the hearth and used to hang cooking pots over the fire. Obviously carved by the original owner/user, this pothook or jizai kagi is heavily grooved from many years of use. The attached rope is probably a replacement to the original rope. An intricate age darkened Keyaki (elm) carving of two dragons vying for dominance in a sea of clouds, glass eyes glowing softly in the rich red wood.
