Japanese Meiji carved bamboo okimono figure of a standing Daruma (also known as Bodhidharma), the body wrapped in a draped robe covered in folds. A fly whisk emerges from the hidden folded arms and extends along the side of the head between one of the elongated earlobes with hoop earring and the furrowed brow. 8 3/4" high. Very good overall condition with typical minor wear. There are a few short cracks and one small chip at the base. From the Phoenix estate of a former Daruma collector.

Description: An elegant porcelain water basin was in light celadon tint. In a rolled lip, shallow belly and flat but well shaped foot ring, the water basin had a beautiful image with strong scholar mood. Natural ice cracks were yielded under the glaze at the bottom of the basin when one minor glaze burst had happened in the cavetto due to firing. Brownish finish was preserved at the foot ring. This Japanese Fireman Hanten is made of hand-loomed Sashiko weave cotton fabric. This was the fabric of choice for the firefighting jackets because they could and would be drenched with water to keep the fireman safe from the flames while fighting fires. This piece is hand sewn and has clearly been heavily used. It has several holes and patches. When I got it years ago, it smelled badly of wood smoke...I did wash it to get rid of the smell.

This elaborate silver Miao headband would be worn by a woman for festival. First a piece of fabric would be tied around the womans head to protect her from the sharp edges of the metal. The headband would make a soft pleasing sound as the woman moved her head. The man on horseback and flowers are a reference to the Miao myth of bringing light into the world. The headband is approx 20 inches long.
