Small Chinese Ming Dynasty Monochrome Moulded Porcelain Dish

This small and unusual porcelain dish was made during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). It has a foliated rim and moulded "ribs" to its underside. It is coated in a pale glaze that has just a hint of green to it. The thickness of the glaze varies in places, at its thickest it is slightly crackled, at its thinnest it has flaked from the surface a little. A fine waterpot moulded in the form of a pair Mandarin Ducks, one resting its head on the neck of the other, covered overall with green and yellow glaze. Late Ming period 16th-17th century. Condition is very good, except one old flake chip below the tail area, visible on enlargement 3, otherwise is excellent. Long: 7 cm and High: 6.5 cm.

The rim decorated with geometric motifs, at the top a face representing Eshu, the messenger deity who acts as a medium between the human and the spirit world. H. 27,5 cm, W. 33 cm. The board has been well used and shows a good amount of wear and a great patina. Nigeria, first half 20th century. Provenance: Ursula Voorhuis, The Netherlands. She owned one of the biggest Yoruba collections in the world and did a lot of field research and collecting in the 60’s and 70’s.
