A very folky early rag doll with pencil face and a touch of blue in her eyes. Every thing is sewn on her and I do believe it has been that way a long time if not original. She has a little square head and no neck and straight across shoulders and short little arms, just the cutest! She has wide hips and hinged arms and legs. Her head is a little floppy front to back but a ribbon tied around her neck I think would remedy that. She is stuffed with cotton and rags and is quite heavy...
The face on this rag doll couldn't be more understated. Just some deepening of color for eyes, nose and mouth. She has a solid body that feels like it is stuffed with rags. Her arms end in little flat fabric with stitches for defined fingers but no stuffing, does the job with no big deal. She has on a faded red calico dress with a black and white calico apron. The dress is a little long but fits her nicely. Her arms and legs are jointed so she sits well. She is 12" tall and is circa 1890.

It is always fun to find something I haven't seen before, this is a black man oilcloth doll. Oilcloth was a heavy duty cotton or linen cloth that was in the old days soaked in linseed oil until it became saturated. The cloth was then hung to dry to produce an almost waterproof fabric. I don't have many left from the earliest days of buying in the 1970's but this is one of them. He is a happy little guy made with a stockinette sort of fabric. His face is nicely embroidered with a fine floss and what looks like hundreds of stitches to make his eyes and teeth. This is an early heavy rag stuffed cloth doll with ink drawn features and sew through the cloth yarn hair. The yarn is the early homespun single twist and is very nice. This doll doesn't need any detective work to know that she is old and completely original. I think she has two other faces under this one but I would never take the risk of hating the other two faces and not being able to get this face back on. I often don't like to take socks off a doll. The blue check dress fits her very nicely and age appropriate. She is in good condition with just one little hole on the side of her chin.
