Max von Schmaedel, German, 1856-?, oil on Academy Board, Portrait of Miss Davenport, 12 x 9 inches, signed and inscribed "M. v. Schmaedel/München" lower right, period frame. The sitter is identified in a copy of a letter dated August 3, 1905, from Seth Mendell to William C. Davenport, President of The Machinists' Bank, Taunton, Massachusetts, in an envelope affixed to the back of the painting. Provenance: Estate of N. David Scotti, Providence, Rhode Island.

Elizabeth Fisher Washington 1871-1953 Washington was the great-grandniece of President George Washington and a highly regarded miniaturist and portrait painter. She studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Hugh Breckenridge and Fred Wagner.
