A very finely crafted watercolor painting of an 18th century dandy in an elegant aristocratic interior, " by " (" by " framed), dedicated "Yours Sincerely" at lower right, and signed rather illegibly below that. The work's quality means the artist must be listed but try as I might, I cannot decipher the name. More than likely the work is circa 1890. Condition is excellent. I opened the old backing in hopes of finding more information or writing but there was none to be found...

A vintage impressionist oil on board painting with modernist touches, unsigned, 20" by 16". The work is probably by a listed artist but alas there is no signature. The almost Cubistic handling of the cloth and rear drape and the foreshortened space are most interesting. The work probably dates to about the 1940's. Unframed, and with some small faults common to older paintings, including light soiling, a few minor losses, edge losses etc.

George Loring Brown, Malden, Massachusetts, 1814-1889. This expensive landscape is a view of Sorrento including Mount Vesuvius in the background. This oil on canvas is 12" x 20" in a 3" 19th century frame. It is signed and titled verso very clearly and it is in very good condition with appropriate craqueleur. The edges have been reinforced but are still original. He lived in the U.S. and Europe and his more sought after paintings are those of southern Italy...

Oil on canvas, 12" by 16", (19 1/2" by 23 1/2"), the scene a white stuccoed house among flowering vines and subtropical vegetation on a sunny Mediterranean coastline, as one would expect to find in Italy, the work signed at lower right with a signature appearing to be "C. Miniature size watercolor painting of two old structures along a fence line in the fall, 5" by 5 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz". The watercolor probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, the artist was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio...

A large watercolor painting, apparently unsigned, 20 1/2" by 28 1/2" (52 cm. by 72 cm.) and 27 1/2" by 36" framed. The antique work has been laid on a thin card, earlier in the 20th century, so if there was information on the recto it is hidden. The fascinating scene contains at least 20 figures going about their business, two horses, numerous boats, and windmills in the distance, and carefully rendered architectural facades. The artist must certainly be someone known...

The work measures 14" by 20" inside the present mat and 25" by 31" as framed in simple light wood, (no glass). The painting is in excellent condition despite the lack of glass. Mats are soiled and should be replaced. A well executed work squarely in the "California Style" of watercolor painting.

Vintage circa 1880's oil on canvas, 20" by 14" and 1" wide old dark oak simple frame, likely the original, signed at lower right side with the typical conjoined "MStraus" signature of well listed Northern California artist MEYER STRAUS (1831-1905). Straus was born in southern Germany, and was in the US by 1848. He traveled the southern states, including New Orleans and Mobile areas, as well as Ohio and Illinois...
