A charming small painting of a cold winter day in the country, a lone woman braving the elements with her cane, in front of a modest cottage doing its best against the harsh elements. Some smoke comes from the chimney as a hint of warmth in an otherwise bleak scene. Measurements as framed are 9" by 13 1/2". There is no signature. The reverse shows this is painted on a circa 1870's gray English art board from a London supply house...

Bennett 87" (and titled again and signed again by the artist on the reverse canvas), 20" by 30" (27" by 36" as framed). The scene feature a filled hay barge at left with two figures aboard, two houses in the middle distance, and tall ships in the far distance. Frinsbury is in southeastern England, east south east of London, not far from the mouth of the River Thames...

A circa 1900 oil on canvas painting of roses against a simple dark background, 12 1/2" by 18", and 20" by 24 1/2" in likely original bright gold frame. There does not appear to be a signature. Roses were a popular subject of painters during that period, with many young ladies especially encouraged to take up painting. The American painter George Cochran Lambdin often used dark or black backgrounds for his floral still life works...

Oil on canvas scene of two white swans in a small lake or pond in a rural area, 24" by 16" (29" by 21" in wide newer frame), signed in red "W W Caffyn" at lower right and dated there "96". This is a work by the noted British artist WALTER WALLOR CAFFYN (1845-1898), who exhibited at the Royal Academy. His paintings tend to be rural scenes of Sussex, Kent and Yorkshire. Caffyn's (mostly large) major works have exceeded $20,000 at auction in London...

This is an oil on canvas, 20" by 30", signed at lower right "J.B. Radway", who was a 19th century California listed artist, (JESSE B. RADWAY, 1826-c. 1905), but the subject is given on the stretcher as "on the North Cheyenne, Col.". According to the Hughes listing, Radway was born in New York in 1826, and was a resident of Silver Lake, Kansas in 1880, Topeka, Kansas in 1884-85, Alameda, California in 1887, and Vineland, New Jersey in 1900. He is believed to have died in New Jersey in about 1905...

Oil on canvas, " by " (" by " framed), the subject a peaceful glen deep in a forest, painted in a luminous style reminiscent of the American Hudson River School, likely Fairy Glen in North Wales, signed at lower right by the noted well listed English artist WILLIAM MELLOR (1851-1931). Mellor was a highly prolific (I see over 1,200 auction records) artist, born in Barnsley, England. He traveled widely, painting often in Wales and Yorkshire...

A fine pair of miniature portrait paintings, on natural organic material, housed in a 1/6 plate daguerreotype case, which is embossed in a cartouche on the front and back "M.B. Brady Case Maker NY". Cases by Brady are highly desirable and avidly collected.

As to the wonderful portraits, the first is of a bewhiskered gentleman in a black jacket, vest, and stock, and a white pleated shirt. The woman is attired in a black pleated dress with lace edging, and a white lace cap...
