A quality work, the medium watercolor on a very thin linen type canvas, framed behind glass, 14 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 26" framed), signed at lower right and bearing there a monogram cypher in an oriental art style, by San Diego artist and collector ELSIE STEWART KIMBERLY (1882-1966). There is little information on this talented woman artist, who was evidently most known around the San Diego area...
A fine landscape drawing in pastel by a skilled hand, Swiss-born artist MAXIM (MAXIMILIAN) SEIBOLD. The drawing measures 9 1/4" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4" by 16 1/2" in attractive probably original old gold framing---very light wear). Seibold was a competent and talented artist, very active around the year 1920, who seems to have left behind little biographical information. Born in Switzerland, he evidently came to America at least by the 'teens, as drawings of Florida and elsewhere are known...
In the style of famous American abstractionist Sam Francis (1923-1994) is this abstract oil (acrylic?) on canvas "splatter" or "drip" painting, unframed, 25" by 23 1/2", unsigned. The work appears to have some age, to perhaps the 1970's. Note the width of the stretcher (almost two inches). The painting is very clean and would make a smashing decorative work for the most modern of interiors...
A watercolor painting of three sprigs of gladioli in a vase, unfinished, dated at lower right 1931 and signed there by listed London-born artist VIOLET CITRON (1901-1995). Citron's biography is sketchy but she apparently spent much of her life in Israel, passing away there in 1995. Landscapes of Holy Land scenes are known, appearing occasionally at auction, usually in Israel (sometimes signed in Hebrew). This work measures 24" by 18" inside the present mat opening and 32" by 25" framed...
A small painting on canvas, 12" by 9" (15" by 12" framed) titled on reverse "Hermit Home", by listed artist GEORGE EUGENE SCHROEDER (1865-1935). The scene is a modest rustic cabin in a forest clearing. The artist signed at lower right and again on reverse, wrote his name and "Heyburn, IDA". Heyburn is in the southern part of the state, between Twin Falls and Pocatello, on the Snake River...
A finely painted work on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, signed at lower left and dated there "60" or "69" by the Scottish-born artist who worked much of his life in England, JOHN PETTIE (1839-1893). The scene is a lavishly appointed bedroom chamber fit for a castle or manor house, a lone female figure at right and her faithful black dog adding an element of interest and mystery...
Original gouache on paper painting "Water Bearer - Michoacan" by listed California artist JACK DUDLEY (1918-1996). Dudley was a familiar sight around the Laguna Beach area for nearly 40 years, exhibiting at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts. He studied under California art luminaries Lorser Feitelson, Barse Miller, Edward Biberman and Edward Reep. Dudley is known for his landscapes, works featuring architecture, genre of the Southwest, Mexico and Latin America, and wildlife...
Oil on canvas, 19" by 27" (25" by 32 1/2" framed), signed in red at lower right L. (LUIGI) PAPALUCA. Papaluca is THE SON OF an artist who died in 1934, known for his depictions of the great sailing ships; works by the son, who emigrated to the United States, are very decorative and popular among collectors of marine art. The painting is in good condition with the exception of several lightly abraded areas, seen in the photos in the sails at left (and one at right portion of sails)...
A classic example of the work of noted artist RAOUL MAUCHERAT DeLONGPRE (1843-1911), featuring white lilacs of spring, artistically placed in a void space. The artist specialized in these hyper realistic works featuring lilacs, and, sometimes, roses mixed in. He specialized in floral still life works. There is considerable confusion among scholars and collectors as to the family of DeLongpre artists, which were "fleuristes" (flower painters) in Lyons, a center for such activity...
Watercolor on paper painting of green hills in the spring or winter, their tops entering low cloud, 15" by 21" (24" by 30" in circa 1950's or 1960's frame), signed at lower left by listed California artist STANFORD STEVENS (1897-1974). This is a very competently executed painting of what I imagine is a California landscape turning green after winter and spring rains...
A beautifully painted oil on Masonite work featuring the peak autumn color in the mountains, likely the Laurentians north of Montreal. The artist is VIVIAN WALKER (1903-1994), who signed her name in the wet paint, at lower left. Walker was born in Hawkesbury, Ontario. She received art training in the Montreal area including at the Ecole des Beaux Arts...
This is a nicely executed watercolor of a cathedral on the banks of a river, identified by an old pencil inscription on the reverse as "At Mantes on the Seine". Measuring 9 1/2" by 13 1/2" inside the mat opening and 15 1/2" by 20" as framed behind Plexiglas, the work appears to be unsigned. In the style of the times, the drawing was glued to a thin board, long ago. This piece was found at a local estate along with another watercolor in my shop, item JB03162 (unsigned landscape of Heidelberg, ...
Large horizontal format painting of Paris street scene with the classic buildings, kiosk, book stalls, and circa 1960 automobiles, signed at lower right illegibly (and there are some initials on the tacking edge as well as something written on the back of the canvas). The unframed work measures 24" by 48". It could certainly benefit from a cleaning to remove fifty years of accumulated light soiling (removing in the process the yellowish cast) but you would not have to do so to enjoy the scene'...
Old circa 1950 painting on board of the majestic Grand Canyon in Arizona, apparently unsigned, measuring 17 3/4" by 22", plus pleasingly old patterned frame, 1 3/4" wide on a side. The artist had talent but the work is also fairly primitive, in a charming way. A lot of effort went into painting this. I would almost describe it as folk art. Materials suggest a late 1940's or early 1950's age. There's some wear on the frame especially at lower right corner. Application of a little brownish p...
Watercolor and ink on paper, 7 1/4" by 9 1/4", (13 1/2" by 15 1/2" in gold color metal frame), the subject a blue-striped lighthouse and keeper's home adjacent, signed at base of that lighthouse by California watercolor artist RITCHIE ALLEN BENSON (1941-1996). This is a nicely executed work and it is in excellent, fresh condition with no foxing nor water staining. Benson was born in the Los Angeles area and died in Washington state, but there is limited biographical information on him. He appar...
A total of FOUR watercolor paintings, framed as pairs, in two frames, each watercolor 10" by 4 7/8", each frame 17 3/4" by 17 3/4". All of the watercolors are signed at lower left with initials "FD". Judging from the scenes, these are likely Northern European and of late nineteenth century date. Condition is excellent, one frame has a little nick at top right. Some research may help determine the identity of the artist.
An old pastel drawing of a New England landscape in winter, 11 1/2" by 17 1/2" (18 1/2" by 22" framed), signed at lower right "MORRIS". The work is after the noted American artist GEORGE HENRY DURRIE (1820-1863). The heartwarming scene of Americana includes yellow house at right, yellow and red outbuildings, sleighs, split rail fence, tiny figures and bare trees. It could also be in imitation of Currier and Ives lithographs of Durrie's works. Condition is excellent; needs to be re-mounted as...
A vintage pastel drawing of wood and thatch traditional homes on stilts in a shallow estuary at sunset, 11 3/4" by 17 3/4" (18 1/2" by 24" framed), signed at lower left "Lohmann" and dated there 1939. On the reverse is an old framer's label from Manila, the Philippines, and written in handwriting on the backing is "Zamboanga, P.I.". I believe Zamboanga is in Mindanao Island in the southern part of the country. This old work, pre-dating the war years, is by an accomplished artist, but I am not ...
