Minamoto no Yoshitsune (born Ushiwakamaru c.1159) was raised in a monastery near in Kyoto. His incredible skill as a warrior emerged when he was very young. In the scene depicted here, he famously defeats the great warrior-monk, Benkei (Saito Musashibo Benkei). The young Ushiwakamaru easily leaps over the larger warrior...

The unframed work measures 30" by 24" and is apparently unsigned. Judging from the canvas and stretcher, this is likely the work of a listed American artist. It has been suggested that it was cut down at some point, as the painting extends over the tacking edge...

The subject could be a sunwashed port in the mountainous south of France, or, possibly, in Algeria or elsewhere in coastal North Africa, where Bernard spent much time. The artist was a student of Cauvy at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Algiers...
