A PAIR of contemporary unframed 8" by 10" oil on canvas paintings of whitewashed buildings and blue seas, as one would see in Santorini or another of the famous Greek Islands of the Aegean Sea, one work signed lower right "Billis". These were likely souvenirs of a great vacation, brought home by tourists wanting some imagery to remind them of the spectacular Greek Islands. Early 20th century Dutch harbor scene by Gerard Wiegman (1875-1964). The painting depicts a large cargo ship moored at harbor and surrounded by a variety of smaller ships, fishing boats and tugs. The sky is painted in moody shades of ochres and grays that echo the colors found in the water. This choice of coloring suggests the obvious industrial nature of this unidentified harbor. This oil on linen is a subtle topical examination of rabbis in study and camaraderie in synagogue, most likely in Warsaw.
Konstantin Szewczenko (1915-1991) was born in Warsaw, Poland, studied at the Warsaw Academy of Arts, and participated in international exhibitions. He is very well known for painting Jewish genre and rabbinical scenes.

A rarely seen work by a well-known artist of Romania, LETA MIRONESCU (1896-1981), the subject an autumn forest painted in greens and yellows and browns. This is a fragment of a larger 18th century European religious painting. The painting is very well painted in oil on wood with a gesso layer and depicts the thorn crowned head of Christ.
