KIEFER (1860-1931). This antique painting features a classic windmill, and a woman classically dressed, carrying a basket, in the left foreground. The late 19th century work is very dirty; a cleaning would work wonders. There is a long vertical crack in the panel at upper left as shown...

From our European Collection, a very large late 17th century / early 18th century oil on canvas painting believed to be titled "A Warning to the Wicked Ezekiel." This piece is obviously in relic condition with several notable tears, punctures, and heavy soiling both front and back. Please note that this piece is still currently under study and not fully researched, so we must refrain from posting pricing information at this time...

Oil on thin card painting of a scenic rocky promontory and turquoise seas, possibly oil on thin canvas laid on card, 9 1/8" by 12 1/8", (14 1/2" by 17 1/4" framed), not signed on front, but on reverse in pen (ballpoint, possibly) is some writing in Russian. A Lithuanian friend who reads Russian said it appears to say the subject is "Gurzuf", which is a popular spot and favorite artist's subject in the Crimea...

This is a skillfully executed painting on canvas, 9 1/2" by 13" (14 1/2" by 18" in its distressed style white/gold frame), the subject several large ripening pears and apples, a pair of plums in the foreground. At lower left is written "A Mr. Caubert/Souvenir Amical/H. Camus". I believe that's what the names appear to be; more research might reveal the full identity of the artist. To date I cannot match this to a listed name...

Oil on canvas painting titled at lower left "Morn. nr. Frinsbury Kent", signed at lower right "Alf. Bennett 87" (and titled again and signed again by the artist on the reverse canvas), 20" by 30" (27" by 36" as framed). The scene feature a filled hay barge at left with two figures aboard, two houses in the middle distance, and tall ships in the far distance. Frinsbury is in southeastern England, east south east of London, not far from the mouth of the River Thames...

"Wine, Pot and Vegetables" Oil on canvas on board 10.5" x 16.5" unframed, 16.5" x 22.5" framed Joseph Bail was born on January 22, 1862 in Limonest in the Rhone region of France. His father, Jean-Antoine Bail, was a trained genre painter who was heavily influenced by the Dutch masters. It is clear that Joseph, as well as his brother Frank, followed in the fathers footsteps...

Attributed to Henri-Alphonse Barnoin, French, 1882-1935. "Marché du plage de Concarneau", depicting the seaside market outside the Brittany fishing village of Concarneau. The town is clearly identifiable from the distinctive town ramparts and tower in the background. In the foreground, Breton women in traditional dress gather to buy and sell foodstuffs while a few fisherman in small boats work at the shore. The loose brushwork is more in the style of Barnoin's pastels and gouaches...

Blanche Camus, French, 1881-1968. This wonderful portrait of a woman on a terrace is 18.5" by 21.2" in an impressive 6" French Impressionist Frame. The canvas has been relined and there is minimal inpainting on the canvas with no repairs. It is from circa 1920-30 and is an extremely fine example of the use of broken brush strokes to convey the spray of sunshine and shadows in the scene.

Oil on board painting of a Mediterranean-looking coastline, 6 1/2" by 10 1/4" (11 3/4" by 16" framed), unsigned, the luminous sunshine handled with considerable skill. This needs only a signature to propel it to stardom; it's really a shame that the artist did not affix his or her name. I suppose this could be Southern California but the buildings don't match up with any coastal locale that comes to mind. I believe the work could date to the 1920's or 1930's. Condition is very good save for ...

A nicely worked painting of a lovely flamenca dancer in Spain, circa 1950's, 20 1/4" by 16 1/2" plus narrow frame, signed at lower right by listed artist CESAR VILOT. Vilot was active at mid century, and is known for his alluring paintings of females both nude and dressed, some painted in the style of Jean Gabriel Domergue. The painting has even soiling consistent with age, and a few minor abrasions, see at left below flounce of dress and to her right about 1/4 of the way down. Note the shadow...

Portrait of a woman by French artist Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905). Board: 9.25"L x 12.9"H framed 18.5" L x 14.75" w. Henner entered the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Prix de Rome in 1858. He exhibited paintings in the Salon, many now in the Musée d'Orsay. In 1889, he became commander of the Legion of Honour and succeeded Cabanel in the Institut de France. In 1900, he won a Grand Prix for painting at the Paris Exposition Universelle. Excellent condition minor age wear.
