This is an Oil on Canvas depicting a Woman Carrying a Child; there is another Child alongside. Signed LR: ABRIEDA. The size is 7.25" X 9.25". This Work is unframed. From a Delaware Estate date this Painting circa 1900 or first 1/4 of the 20th Century. jpgs tell the rest.
A striking, traditional, antique, oil on old oak panel painting, with even an Old Master feel, the painting itself 13 1/4" by 15 3/4" (34.3 cm. by 41.3 cm), the scene a landscape dominated by a placid large white dray-type horse (painted with extraordinary sensitivity and skill), a goat at left foreground, and resting cattle in the distance, the remainder of the composition dominated by a sky filled with beautiful clouds, and classic willow trees at right...
Oil on canvas laid in recent times on wood panel, 19 3/4" by 15 3/4", unframed, the subject three Roman women watching from an exposed cliffside residence as they search the sea below for the ships of loved ones returning home. This is after an 1895 work by well-known, important, English Victorian artist LAWRENCE ALMA-TADEMA (1836-1912), titled "A Coign of Vantage". This is not painted as finely as the original, to be sure, but the artist was moderately skilled. There is stable craquelure...
Oil on canvas, 15 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 25" as frame), the subject a copper or ceramic tub filled with red flowers , all against a simple background. The painting is not signed on the front but on the reverse is "Yerda Werkel" and "von Kurtz" and "1.9.46". So we have likely a German, Swiss or Austrian artist who would have painted this soon after the end of the war. I don't see a listing for the artist but she was talented...
Large painting of a protest at night in front of an official building, 44" by 31" (50" by 37" framed), unsigned. This is a French work that is most certainly by a listed artist, but he/she remains anonymous. The complexity of the foreground and details of the facade are indications of the skill of the artist. The painting is of a large and impressive size, and would make a decorative addition to a traditional interior...
For some time now, in art-historical expert circles, a painting causes concern. Discovered a good ten years ago in Schwarzach im Pongau ( Province of Salzburg ) it shows a boy at the age of about six years. In spite of partly contrary opinion, everything indicates at the moment that the portrayed child represents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This would, as far as is known, be the earliest image of the composer. The Mozart town Salzburg however, is not only happy about it...
This is a very large portrait of a dark headed lady in her finest clothes. It appears to be mid 1700's and more info to be added later.
Oil on canvas painting of flowers, possibly asters, signed at lower right by 20th century listed English artist Leslie S. G. Harries. There is no date on the painting but a guess of 1950 would likely be close. The work measures 18 1/2" by 15 1/4" (21 1/2" by 18" framed). Condition is excellent with just a very small uneven/pressure mark area in the canvas to the right of the petal at right, and there are a few pinpoint losses in that area...
Oil on canvas large painting of an interior, 40" by 30", approximately 46" by 34" in white frame, signed at lower right by the artist ERWIN WENDING (1914-1993), and dated there "58". The image and colors used are rather expressionist, in the manner typical of the few Wending works that have appeared on the market. According to an online biography, Wending was born in Freiberg, Germany in 1914, the year in which World War One began...
Oil on board painting of a sunny street scene in southern Italy, a central figure walking towards the viewer and others going about their business including washing clothes. The painting, signed at lower left "Pasini", measures 17 1/2" by 11 1/2" (21 1/2" by 15 1/2" in attractive old gold framing). The work likely dates to about 1900 or 1910. There is a light accumulated soiling and yellowed varnish that would make a cleaning well worth the investment...
Oil on wood panel of a lady under a portico or trellis high above a coast like Amalfi in Italy, signed at lower right with initials "EC" and dated there "03". The work measures 12" by 7 1/2" (18" by 12 3/4" as framed). On the reverse of the panel is written in pencil old handwriting "E. W. Clawson 431 Pacific St.". It's possible that this could be the artist ("EC") but I can't be certain of that. I do think that a professional cleaning would be well worth the investment. It would really bri...
"Paris Afternoon" oil on canvas 24"x30" Charles Cobelle, born Carl Edelman (1902-1994) was a modern French master of painting, lithography and a fine muralist, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He is considered the last link to the great tradition of the Open Line School of Paris. He began his career in Paris after earning Bachelor and Master's Degrees at the University of Munich. Later he studied at the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and with Marc Chagall. At Menton on the Riviera, he ...
An 18th or early 19th century painting of a noble gentleman, oil on canvas, 30 1/2" by 23 1/2" on the stretchers 35" by 27 3/4" framed. This work does not appear to be actually signed, though there is much writing in blurred old ink on the stretcher in old German hand, seemingly identifying the sitter. The old style script and the way the ink has spread into the wood makes it all difficult to read. I do see, I think, "Franz Joseph Augustin von Stichner" or similar, and elsewhere the word "...
Charles Brooking, 1723-1759, English. This oil on panel is a fine example of the early work of Charles Brooking, known as one of the finest British Maritime painters. It is 13" by 19" in a handsome newer
frame (overall dimensions of 16 3/4" by 22 2/4".) The condition is good and it is signed indistinctly (as many of his paintings are) on the piece of wood floating in the lower front of the painting. He is listed in Benezit and his paintings sell for up to $400,000.
Set of THREE Italian circa 1946 paintings on canvas, in decorative gold matching frames, unsigned, each 9" by 11 1/4" as framed, the subject familiar scenes of Venice, executed in the classical eighteenth century style of Canaletto or Guardi. These works were commonly produced for the tourist trade by talented artists. This set evidently dates to the immediate post-war period, as one bears a date stamp on reverse, 3 Ottobre 1946 and a "Made in Italy" circular sticker. Condition is generally ...
"Annunciation"
Oil on canvas, 22.25" x 28.25 unframed, 31.75" x 37.75" framed (THIS PIECE APPEARS IN THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY FOR THE ARTIST)
Born at Terheyden North Brabant on April 21st, 1806, Petrus van Schendel studied at the Antwerp Academy under Mathieu-Ignace van Breen (1773-1839), a painter of historical subjects. He then worked in Amsterdam for two years before moving to Rotterdam in 1832 where he made himself a reputation as a portrait painter. He remained there until 1838. He re...
