Titled on two labels "Monterey Wharf", this is a striking, impressionist yet modern painting by a talented artist who was born in nearby Watsonville of Japanese ancestry. Yoshizumi was incarcerated during World War II at the Poston, Arizona internment camp. Many net references discuss the art he was able to produce while there, depicting his grim and alien surroundings...

Striking modern painting on masonite panel, signed on the reverse "Kalamaras --72", likely tempera, the image difficult to describe: the viewer appears to be looking out of a green-framed two pane window at a neighboring house with reddish wall, sloping roof line, and a wooden-looking door-like window.......well, it IS difficult to describe. The work measures 19 1/2" by 15 1/2" inside the frame; inside the green outlines of the "window" the size is 14" by 9 3/4"...

The painting probably dates to about 1880 but has been laid on the plywood in recent decades (some waxy drips on the plywood as seen). There is some craquelure with a few pinpoint losses. I have searched in vain for any hint as to who the artist might have been...
