Extraordinary oil on wood panel painting depicting Native American thatched huts on an Arizona Indian Reservation. The coloring of the work is especially nice--with a predominance of amber, lavender, and yellow. The style is nearly impressionistic, particularly in the treatment of the background. Abraham Rosenthal (Russian/American, 1886-1963) oil on artist board painting of Rockport Harbor. Size: 16 inches x 20 inches. Abraham Rosenthal was a Russian born, American painter who lived in New York and Rockport, Massachusetts. He studied at the Art Students League, Cooper's Union, and was a student of Emile A. Gruppe. He was a member of the Rockport Art Association. Condition is excellent; offered in a gilt wood frame. Signed lower right.

CLEMENT METIVIER ( 1910-1996; A CANADIAN-AMERICAN Artist. "AUTUMN IN THE HILLS", Oil on Masonite. Signed lower right. Metvier was born in Canada, worked in the New England area, and in 1946, moved to California where he remained until his death. He was known as a California painter. “He was a highly skilled plein air painter, his works are rare” (Edna Hughes: Artists in California.) Dimension; 16" x 19"; framed; 20.5" x 24.5". Excellent condition.

A striking modernist work titled "Fantasia" and dated 1952, by Tucson Fine Arts Association member BESS WEST. The work , oil on canvasboard (18" by 14", and 18 1/2" by 22 1/2" in apparently original frame) is signed at lower right "B. WEST" and on reverse appears the title, artist name and date, and an original card from the Seventh Annual Independent Open Show in Tucson in 1953...

This is a work squarely in the Hudson River style by a talented landscape artist of the second half of the century, DANIEL CHARLES GROSE (1838-1900). The scene is a significant river winding among steep green bluffs, a feathery tree at left, the only sign of the hand of man a split rail fence. Signed at lower left and dated there 1874, the work measures 8" by 12" (12 3/4" by 17" in its original attractive old gilded frame)...

By the contemporary Japanese artist HIROMICHI YAMAGATA (1948-). this can be described as a collage of tissue like paper on which is drawn in pencil and blue ink an abstract, almost biomorphic decorative design, charcoal used to create a smudged background, then the paper was affixed around the edges to a white canvas background. It is signed at lower right "Yamagata" and dated there 2007...

A most unusual painting on wood panel, 24" by 30", unframed, featuring some gritty, tough-looking downtown Los Angeles men in a claustrophobic, vertiginous streetscape of old hotel buildings. The Hotel Rosslyn and annex were built in 1914 and 1923, respectively, and were fashionable places to stay, in their day, at Fifth and Main in old downtown. The medium used is likely casein or other non-oil, water-based paint...

Oil on canvas, 20" by 26" (25 3/4" by 32" framed), possibly but not necessarily an Illinois subject, by an Illinois-born artist who went on to notoriety in California impressionist Plein Air painting, ARTHUR HILL GILBERT (1894-1970). This is a rather early (likely circa 1925) work. Gilbert was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois, graduating from the Evanston Academy in 1913 and then going on to two years at nearby Northwestern University...

This oil on canvas painting of a waterfall in a forest, the light refracting the spray into a rainbow, was acquired by me more than 15 years ago here in Los Angeles. Measuring 14 1/2" by 11 3/4" (19" by 16" in circa 1930 frame), it retains some evidence of a signature, in red, at lower right, that signature ending in "s"; and on the stretcher confidently written in an old hand is "F. De Bergh Richards". (His name has been variously spelled as "De Berg", "DeBourg", etc.)...

Oil on canvas, 50" by 31", unframed, signed on the spine of the book at lower center in true trompe l'oeil style and dated there 1901. This is a beautifully painted work by an historical painter of late 19th century California, ALBERT JENKS (1830-1901). It is already quite impressive as it is, but, with a gold frame around it, I can envision this gracing the wall of a law office or museum...
