A large unframed oil, 34" by 46", unsigned, a vintage mid-century work ***AFTER*** a DEAN CORNWELL (1892-1960) painting which was executed in 1953 for a New York Life Insurance Co. calendar, in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the incorporation of New York City. The painting is meticulously painted and I contacted auctions dealing with illustration art to see if it might be a study for the finished work. The response is that it is most likely simply a work after Cornwell, so it is off...

This is a Signed and Dated Portrait by Fr. Schell. The artist trained under Thomas Eakins and his influence can be seen in this portrait. The artist was from Philadelphia and connected with the Philadelphia Fine Arts Museum. It is mounted in a new goldleaf frame and the canvas measures 24 1/2" x 20 1/2". Excellent Condition.
