VICTOR JOSEPH GATTO: AMERICAN (1893-1965) WORKING THE FARM;
Oil on Canvasboard
Signed lower right:
VJG, with no artistic background or training, started painting at age 45-48. In 1943, he had his first exhibit in NYC and gained instant recognition in the NY art scene as a folk art, naive/primitive painter, His works were exhibited in many major museums, (MOMA,WHITNEY ETC,) and he is listed in numerous art reference books. He painted with vibrant colors, and complex details...
This is one of three works I am offering, by a talented Canadian mid 20th century painter who signed her works "Eola Sutherland". Although there is online a photo of a gravestone for an Eola Hayton Sutherland (1884-1967) of Ontario, likely our painter, there is a lack of biographical information on the artist. Her skill is obvious, as is her familiarity with the Group of Seven and their style. Several have sold at auction in Toronto. This example measures 16" by 20", and is oil on board...
Painting of a city skyline, perhaps New York or San Francisco, 20" by 16", (25" by 21" framed), signed at upper right by the noted Brazil-California 20th century artist OZZ FRANCA (1928-1991). Franca is perhaps best known for his paintings of Native American women, and "Big Eye" children, but he also painted a wide range of other subject matter...
This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.
For the collector of early, 19th century California art, here is an east coast-style still life work, 10" by 14 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "Bertie L Emery" and dated there 1892. The shallow dish holds oranges, grapes, a banana, and possibly slices of cake or bread, the dish resting on a white cloth, on an unseen tabletop. Interestingly for art history, Emery signs her first name as "Bertie"...
An oil on Masonite painting of a classical nude male, signed lower left by noted California artist BEN CARRE (1883-1978) The work measures 17 1/2" by 24 3/4", and as framed 23 1/2" by 29". Carre was born in Paris and was an early set painter for the Paris Opera, Comedie Francaise, and Covent Garden. He became an early art director for the Gaumont Film Studios, painting trompe l'oeil backgrounds at a time in early film making when props were rare and expensive...
William Corasick, b. 1907, studied at Temple University and at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, and the Butler Art Institute. This unique and exciting abstract is painted on paper and clear film. In very good original condition and professionally framed. Image measurements are app. 20" x 20".
Oil on canvas landscape of the California coast with classic wind-shaped Monterey Cypress tree, possibly the famous tree on 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula near Carmel, measuring 24" by 20" and 1 5/8" wide vintage white painted wood frame, signed at lower right "Bessie Lasky" and dated there "41". This is a beautiful California plein air work by noted artist BESSIE MONA LASKY (1888-1972), a lesser known but listed painter of the California school...
Oil on canvas painting, 24" by 36" (30" by 42" framed), late 20th century, the subject a family of elephants at an African waterhole, signed at lower right by listed artist DON ERDMAN (sometimes spelled as ERDMANN). The work is similar to works by better known artists such as David Shepherd or Bob Kuhn which bring thousands of dollars. Erdman is listed in Davenport's, but I am hard pressed to find more information on him...
Claude Charles Buck, Santa cruz, California, 1890-1974. This stunning jewel is Claude Buck at his usual dreamy best. It is oil on board of a beautiful red haired mother and child in a landscape with a crescent moon and flowers. It is 8.5" w by 12" h in a lively french styled frame with overall dimensions of 17.5" w by 21" h. It is oil on board, signed and has an additional drawing on the back. It is framed in a beautiful gold leaf frame...
An unusual and decorative circa 1930's unframed 16" by 20" oil on canvas painting featuring a beautiful young maiden centered in a tawny, mountainous Southwest landscape, Native Americans surrounding her, signed lower left rather illegibly. I have long studied the signature and believe it might be "Ben Mead", (1902-1986) who was a southwestern (Texas and California) artist-illustrator based in Amarillo and Dallas. Mead focused on illustration for publication...
Oil on unstretched canvas painting of a traditional temple's courtyard, signed at lower left "Pociecha", "Nikko", and dated 1920. This is a rare, very early work by a painter known commonly as STAN PORAY (Stanislaus Pociecha Poray, 1888-1948), and most associated with California art. The work measures 15 1/2" by 12 1/4". Poray was born into nobility (his father a count) in Krakow, Poland and was educated in art there and in Paris...
A beautifully executed painting on canvas of New Mexico Native American pottery pieces, (perhaps from the Zia Pueblo?), signed at lower left by artist "Angelika". The work, 20" by 24" (24 1/2" by 28 1/2" framed) is painted in a realistic style, so that the pots seem to be three dimensional. This is a highly decorative piece and will complement your Southwest interior. The frame is not especially complementary; a more appropriate one will enhance the presentation.
Evelyn Hoffer Floyd
(American, 1919 - 2003)
Magpie on a Branch
Oil on Porcelain, signed lower right
Frame: 13 ½” x 11 ½”
Floyd, a notable porcelain artist in Alexandria, learned to paint on porcelain in the early 1970’s and taught her craft in workshops for the Fairfax County Adult Education program.

A painting of the California desert, painted in impressionist style, oil on canvasboard, 14" by 18", unframed, titled on reverse in old hand, "Palm Desert Cal. Smoke Trees". The artist was born in Illinois, working in St. Louis before moving to Southern California in 1918. He studied at Scripps College in Claremont east of Los Angeles. Wheeler started painting rather late in life, at 50, according to a label with biography affixed to the reverse side. He moved to Palm Desert near Palm Springs...
Oil on canvas, 18" by 12 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right "F M Shane", and inscribed on reverse of the canvas, "Loveland Canon/Road to Estes Park/Colorado/1925". This work is somewhat primitive but the artist has created an interesting painting. There is a listed artist Frederick Emmanuel Shane (1906-1992), a Missouri regionalist who also painted in Colorado; conceivably this could be an early work of that artist, for some reason signed "F M Shane". The painting appears to have been fra...

Oil on canvas laid on board, 18" by 12", (25 1/2" by 19 1/2" in its quality gilt frame), apparently faintly signed at lower right and bearing the artist's red estate stamp on the reverse. This is an impressionistic view of a mother or nanny and her two young children, one in a baby carriage, by a well listed painter. Hartley was the granddaughter of famous American painter George Inness, and she was quite connected in the art world, knowing such luminaries as John Singer Sargent, Whistler, an...
Folk Art Portrait by American Artist, attributed to Sheldon Peck (1797-1868). This Portrait was purchased at a North Carolina auction from the Larew Collection. The 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman was said to be Thomas Johnston from Concord, NC (Sept. 1850). It was marked on the original canvas (relined) bought in Davie County. It is mounted in a mahogany veneer frame with yellow pine backing. Canvas 29" 24" and the Frame is 38" x 33". The portrait was restored in 1973 by Hen...
Oil on canvas painting of a tabby cat, 7" by 5" (12" by 10" framed), circa 1970 to 1980 judging from the framing, signed lower right "Jody". The artist was certainly talented; the likeness of the cat to reality is well above average. Condition is excellent. Needs to be nailed more tightly into frame.
A circa 1880 American painting on canvas of a white clapboard house on a farm or rural land, the structure surrounded by bare trees, white fences and outbuildings, a sitting dog strategically placed at center staring directly at the viewer. The work measures 18" by 22" and 22" by 25" framed. It is in very original condition, so original that we might be looking at a heavily soiled surface that would brighten dramatically with a professional cleaning, though there is no doubt that the color pal...
Johann Berthelsen, 1883-1972. This gem is a typical example of Berthelsen's New York Scenes. It is 12" by 15 3/4" in a 4"period French frame. Overall dimensions are 20" by 23 3/4". Signature is lower right and condition is good. His New York scenes sell for up to $45,000.
Oil on panel painting of pink desert mountains and flowering dunes in the foreground, 16" by 20" (25" by 29" in wood carved frame), signed in the paint at lower left with a signature that appears as "Bo W(xxxxxxx)". The circa 1960 oil is by an artist who certainly must have been familiar with the palette knife California desert scenes, with rich impasto, of John Hilton (1904-1983). The style and feeling is similar. The painting could benefit from a cleaning, after fifty years. A gold frame ...

Oil on masonite, 18" by 14" (22" by 18" in its wood frame), the subject the familiar streets of the French Quarter, this being a view of Pirate's Alley, from Jackson Square, facing Royal Street, signed at lower right "Weller". I take from the website of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts: "Dell Weller studied four years at the Art Students League in New York. After two years of study in Mexico, he returned to New Orleans. He developed a widespread reputation for his wildlife etchings. At pr...
William E. Plimpton (American) Sunset Painting Oil on Canvas Framed Excellent Condition. Painting measures 20" x 29 1/2".
Oil on canvas painting of grouse in the snow among pines, 16" by 20", signed at lower right "Berta C. Richards 50", and titled in ink on the reverse "Spring Around the Corner/in Colo Foot Hills/Berta C. Richards/1950". I do not see a listing for the artist but this vintage oil is competently executed by a talented hand. The condition is excellent, since this has been protected actually behind glass, in the veneer-type frame often seen on Currier and Ives prints. I think you might well want to...
Oil on masonite, circa late 1940's or early 1950's, 16 1/2" by 23 1/2" (22" by 31 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left by Pittsburgh artist PERRY DAVIS. This is a beautifully painted work by an obviously talented artist, although I have not to date found a listing on him. There's a label on the reverse of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, 37th Annual Exhibition with the title, and artist's address. The painting has a strong WPA feeling to it. A little research will determine the date of...
Oil on canvas landscape of steep red rock cliffs bordering a canyon in which a lone rider and his horse are to be seen at lower right, 20" by 24" (24" by 28" in white frame), signed at lower left by well listed Texas and New Mexico-associated artist (JOHN) GAITHA BROWNING (1912-1992). The painting is titled on the reverse canvas in pencil "Red Rocks Country". Browning was born in northern Mississippi and moved to Texas with his family as a youth, where he studied art with Harry Anthony DeYoung...

Old oil on canvas laid on board landscape painting of a steep-sided canyon, framed by tall foreground trees, the work signed at very bottom left center (hidden by frame) "H. Baumgartner". Measurements are 16" by 12" and 18 1/2" by 14 1/2" in old wood framing. I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's. While there are German artists that would correspond to this name, their work is unlike this piece. It was found here in Los Angeles, so this could well be a California painting by an art...
A very colorful and whimsical MCM or "Retro" painting of doll-like figures appearing as a hybrid between clowns and Raggedy Ann dolls, by the noted California-based painter at mid century, PAUL BLAINE HENRIE (1932-1999). This circa 1960's or 1970's oil or acrylic on canvas measures 18" by 24" (23" by 29" framed). Condition is excellent, the original goldish frame a bit dusty and dulled by age. Signed at lower center and appears to be dated there "66". Henrie was born in Tampa, Florida and by...
