A really nicely painted oil on canvas landscape of a whitewashed, red-roofed farmhouse, a lane leading up to it, a dog, several tiny figures and a large feathery tree completing the scene, 13" by 16 3/4" (18 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right "G Zannoni" and dated below that with what appears as an 1860's date (partly under the frame, hard to see). The work may look slightly primitive close up but when viewed from normal viewing distance it all comes together as intended...
A PAIR of oil on canvas paintings of a younger man, each 33" by 24 3/4", unsigned, circa late 20th century. The pair is striking in that one is painted in monochromatic style, the other in natural color. Placed together, they make for a most interesting set. Condition is generally good with a few minor flaws they have acquired, including light abrasions, light soiling in places, a tiny tiny puncture, etc. Speckles in hair on colored painting are just a light effect...
A circa 1910 small oil on canvas landscape of a forest pond, signed at lower right "O. Sch". This 3 1/2" by 5 1/2" work (9 1/2" by 11 1/2" framed) came from a local family of German heritage. Their art, some of which I acquired, came with the family from the old country. This work has some condition issues, as the canvas over the decades has buckled, with sharp horizontal roughly parallel "ridges" now apparent, as well as craquelure...
Oil on canvas painting of a white bench in a park or garden, the sun dappled vegetation depicted in colorful palette of purple, yellow, and green, signed at lower right by Southern California contemporary artist PATRICIA SHILLING-STEWART. The work measures 16" by 20" (20" by 23 1/2" in shiny white laminate frame)...
For the collector of classic California Plein Air art, an oil on canvas work, "Laguna Waves", 20" by 24" (27 1/2" by 31 1/2" in quality reproduction gold frame), signed at lower right by well listed and often-auctioned CHRISTIAN VON SCHNEIDAU (1893-1976). The painting features true impressionist brush strokes and colors, enhanced by a recent professional cleaning which really revealed those beautiful strokes and colors. Von Schneidau was born in Sweden of noble birth...

Oil on canvas landscape, unframed, 14 1/2" by 21", signed at lower right, titled "Sheep Herds" or similar on reverse, the subject a forest with a vaguely defined figure at right, and equally vaguely defined sheep at center left. An extensive country landscape featuring rolling fields and meadows, the evidence of man including a dirt road, fence posts, and distant house, as chickens forage at center right. The oil on canvas, 22" by 25" work (27" by 30 1/2" framed) is signed at lower left by listed German artist OTTO MARX (1887-1962). There is not a lot of information on the artist but he did produce nicely painted impressionist works of the German countryside. Marx signed his name and dated the painting 1912. The colo...
Oil on canvasboard painting of flowers, vase and pot, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" (14" by 18" framed), signed at lower right "L. E. Thackery". No listed artist comes up with a search for this name, but that does not diminish the quality of the work itself, which probably dates to about the 1940's. There are two missing small areas of paint at left, otherwise condition is excellent. The frame post-dates the art and is pleasant and complementary.
This work needs some TLC, due to a large rip, unstable and missing paint, and grime......a vintage late 19th century/early 20th century work on canvas, 18" by 30", unframed, apparently unsigned, the subject one of the volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest. The painting should be saved for posterity, but for that to happen, it will require relining, cleaning and inpainting by a professional restorer. If you are a restorer yourself, this would be an ideal acquisition.
Old master painting, the subject soldiers in an extensive landscape battle scene, some mounted, 16" by 24 3/4", unframed, on old canvas, relined long ago, not signed, but on the stretcher is written in old hand "Borgognone". JACQUES COURTOIS, 1621-1676, was well known for his skill painting battle scenes. As a result of his fame, centuries later, it is tempting apparently to attribute all unsigned battle paintings to his hand, or his studio, or circle. A large number of auction houses in Euro...
Here is a prize for the collector of Californiana----an idealized view of a mission in the golden days of yore, painted around 1935 I would guess. There is a signature at lower right that appears as Y. Arnold or similar. The painting is on a coarse weave canvas, almost like burlap or jute, laid down on an old board, on the back of which is a color print of a landscape. Size is 30" by 24" including the simple narrow wood strip frame. The painting surface is not varnished at all, but I'm not s...
