Circa 1880, oil on canvas of 3 Shire horses in English countryside signed G. Melville. Melville was a 19th c artist and painter of English rustic scenes. Both the fame and painting are in excellent antique condition, measuring site size 29" x 35.5", framed 36" x 42.5".
A good, small-size 19th century Mexican retablo depicting San Jeronimo. After a spiritual revelation, the saint lived as a hermit, often flagellating himself with a scourge and beating himself with rocks. He is shown here his traditional attributes of penitence--the bloody scourge, a skull, and rocks. He is often shown with fresh self-inflicted wounds, in this case a spray of blood droplets from his chest...
Lovely antique oil signed at extreme lower right corner by the Dutch master artist JAN JACOB COENRAD SPOHLER (1837-1923), the subject a classic canal in summer, the scene including windmills, boats, houses, churches (Utrecht, Leiden?) and tiny figures. The work measures 8 1/2" by 13 1/2" (10 1/2" by 15 1/2" in older 20th century frame). The work is very typical of his paintings, many of which show ice skaters in the winter. Larger works have reached $40,000 at auction in the Netherlands...
An example of a naïve or "primitive" landscape painting in the Hudson River School style, 23 1/2" by 30", (30" by 36" in old frame), unsigned as is typical, circa late 19th or possibly even very early 20th century. The painting has all the elements of such paintings----the feathery trees, cottage with quaint smoke from a chimney, a lone figure in foreground, small distant boats, distant mountain...
Late 19th c oil on canvas painting of a forest landscape scene in an aesthetic movement frame. Frame was made in Boston, Mass. Painting is unsigned. Painting has had some restoration. Some paint loss. Frame condition is very good commensurate with age.
Measures in frame 20" x 17"
English circa 1850 landscape oil painting of a castle (the shape suggesting often-painted Windsor Castle) topping a low mountain, two tiny figures in the foreground. The work, 16 1/2" by 22" (19 1/2" by 25" in frame that appears "married" to it, and not that successfully, at that) is very, very grimy. This is a restoration project----to remove the dirt of 150 years, repair several small tears, and varnish the dry surface. There is no signature visible...
Large painting of a protest at night in front of an official building, 44" by 31" (50" by 37" framed), unsigned. This is a French work that is most certainly by a listed artist, but he/she remains anonymous. The complexity of the foreground and details of the facade are indications of the skill of the artist. The painting is of a large and impressive size, and would make a decorative addition to a traditional interior...

PAIR of English landscape oil on canvas landscape paintings, each including a cottage, a figure (one fishing off a small bridge, the other walking towards the cottage), and feathery trees, each 9" by 16" (18" by 25" framed), one inscribed in ink on the stretcher "Sketch in Kent C.J. A nineteenth century painting in the style of Italian Old Master artist Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), measuring 29 1/2" by 23 1/2" (37" by 31" framed), the subject foreground gondolas in the lagoon opening out to the sea beyond, a classic bridge and architecture framing the gondoliers. The great Italian master Guardi was often copied over the centuries. His flickering brush and distinctive silvery light and subtle color have been long imitated but never equaled...
Found recently in Maine, this is an antique oil on board painting, 12" by 14 3/4" as framed, unsigned, the subject purple grapes and a ripe peach, the autumnal grape leaf suggesting the season of harvest, all on a marble ledge or table, with a distant view beyond. The gray academy board, style and framing suggest a date of execution of about 1880. The painting is very American in feeling, bordering on folk art as there's a naivete. The frame has wear and an obvious loss at lower left corner. ...
