A fine landscape drawing in pastel by a skilled hand, Swiss-born artist MAXIM (MAXIMILIAN) SEIBOLD. The drawing measures 9 1/4" by 12 1/2" (13 1/4" by 16 1/2" in attractive probably original old gold framing---very light wear). Seibold was a competent and talented artist, very active around the year 1920, who seems to have left behind little biographical information. Born in Switzerland, he evidently came to America at least by the 'teens, as drawings of Florida and elsewhere are known...

An old pastel drawing of a New England landscape in winter, 11 1/2" by 17 1/2" (18 1/2" by 22" framed), signed at lower right "MORRIS". The work is after the noted American artist GEORGE HENRY DURRIE (1820-1863). The heartwarming scene of Americana includes yellow house at right, yellow and red outbuildings, sleighs, split rail fence, tiny figures and bare trees. It could also be in imitation of Currier and Ives lithographs of Durrie's works...

A vintage pastel drawing of wood and thatch traditional homes on stilts in a shallow estuary at sunset, 11 3/4" by 17 3/4" (18 1/2" by 24" framed), signed at lower left "Lohmann" and dated there 1939. On the reverse is an old framer's label from Manila, the Philippines, and written in handwriting on the backing is "Zamboanga, P.I.". I believe Zamboanga is in Mindanao Island in the southern part of the country...

Large (22" by 36", unframed) pastel drawing on heavy paper, which has been in turn laid on canvas, signed at lower left center by the well-listed American landscape artist GEORGE DOUGLAS BREWERTON (1827-1901). The impressive drawing features a Hudson River School-like landscape with no figures, the hazy ball of the sun dominating the sky. The overall effect is one of Luminism. Brewerton led a fascinating life for his times...

Small (7 3/4" by 5 1/2" framed) pastel drawing titled on reverse "Sage on the Black Rock", signed at lower left and bearing the business card of contemporary Nevada artist Ruth Wood Cantrell, a member of the Reno Artist Co-operative. The Black Rock of course is best known as the site of the Burning Man festival, held every year in northwestern Nevada in one of the most remote locations in the lower 48 states...

An accomplished, very western American pastel drawing on paper of a frontiersman, (11" by 9", and 15 1/4" by 13 3/4" as simply framed), signed at lower right "Lea" and with copyright symbol. I sent images to the Tom Lea (1907-2001) Institute in El Paso, Texas, thinking this may be by that well-known artist but they responded that it is not. Therefore, it is offered as simply a nice drawing with a lot of western appeal. Likely date of execution circa 1970's or 1980's.

Circa 1900 American pastel landscape drawing, 22 1/2" by 9 3/4" (29" by 15" framed), apparently unsigned, in the style of William Chandler and the pastel school of the period. The work is framed behind non-glare glass, which blurs the detail. Condition appears to be excellent. The vertical format would fit your hard-to-fit narrow wall. See other American pastels of the late 19th century/early 20th century period in my shop.

A pastel drawing titled on label "Gentle Current", 1998, featuring a western river at sunset, the clouds reflecting the colors of last light. The work measures 12" by 8" (23 1/2" by 19 1/2" in silvery framing). The artist, BRUCE PARK (1955-) is a resident of Bozeman, Montana. He attended Humboldt State University at Arcata, California, and the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1979...

Pastel on paper drawing of a dramatic cliff likely somewhere in southern Utah's red rock geological wonderlands, 17 1/2" by 22" (23 1/2" by 29 1/2" in original metal framing), signed at lower center in pencil and inscribed there "Utah 1969". Despite numerous efforts I have been unable to decipher the signature though I suspect it to be by a listed or recognized artist. The drawing shows it was created by a talented hand, and the rich colors make for a most attractive landscape work...

For the collector of art featuring the cat, here is a fine good-sized drawing of two cats, apparently unsigned, but, I think, there's a high likelihood that the artist would be someone listed. The drawing diameter is 18 1/2", the work diameter as framed is 29 3/4". If you look closely you can see that the artist assembled a number of sheets of paper on which to work---you can see the lines where they meet...

Pastel on paper work, the subject a wintry tree and split rail fence in a snowy landscape, a distant house with smoke from a chimney suggestive of a snug refuge from the cold. The work is signed at lower left "E Taylor". Most likely, the date of execution is within ten years of the turn of the century. Condition is excellent. Measurements are 12" by 17 3/4" inside the mat and 21 1/2"by 26" in silvery modern framing with gold tint (some wear noted especially at bottom)...

Pastel on paper laid on board drawing of trees and fields, a shed providing a human element, 7" by 9" (11" by 12 3/4" framed), signed at lower right "R. Nourse". This is a very fine little drawing with a touch of post-impressionist Van Gogh and other artists especially in the branches and trunks of the tall trees. The only listed artist with the name Nourse is Elizabeth Nourse. I see there is a Rebecca Nourse but the time period does not correspond to the drawing which likely dates to the mid...

Original impressionist pastel drawing of a French (I believe) street, (10 1/2" by 13 1/2" (17 1/2" by 20 1/2" framed), with outdoor tables under umbrellas, a fountain, cars, and cropped trees, signed with initials at lower right and dated there '86. This looks like a Mediterranean or southern scene, the shutters and little windows suggesting that to me. The word "Libre" is visible at right so that suggests France and not Italy. The artist knew how to handle a piece of chalk. There is a wealt...

Finely executed pastel on paper drawing of bridges spanning a major river, presumably the Rhein in Germany, 11 1/2" by 15 1/2" (15 1/2" by 19 1/2" as framed), signed at lower left by listed German artist RUDOLF MULLER-GERHARDT (1873-1962) (and sometimes spelled as GERHARD). Pastel drawing of architecture and figures, 18" by 14 3/4", 23" by 19 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Frederick Millson". The architecture could be Spanish, as would be found in Southern California, or possibly more exotic, such as Islamic North Africa. This is an accomplished drawing in fine condition by an elusive artist about which there seems to be little to know. This would have been among the earlier works of an artist who was born in Berkeley, California and went on to become a well regarded talent in the Southwest. Pastel on paper drawing of a rocky coastline with sailing craft offshore, apparently unsigned, 9 1/4" by 23", (16 3/4" by 31" as framed), circa 1900. The style of the drawing is reminiscent of that of American artists like Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908). The popular and common pastel art of William Chandler also comes to mind. The work needs a new mat and the old acidic wood backing is best replaced. Otherwise for its age this work is in excellent condition.

I don't see a listing by this name so the work stands on its own decorative powers, which are significant. There is a lot of atmosphere in this quiet scene, and the piece is big enough to power a wall on its own. Condition is excellent. The photos were taken through the old non-glare glass, so, ...

Pastel on gray paper affixed at edges to a linen-covered board, 21 3/4" by 25 1/2", unframed, signed at lower right in pencil "MARINO" and dated at lower left in European hand "1959". The image appears to be perhaps a highly abstracted horse or horse head, surrounded by abstracted imagery in electric blues, oranges, reds and greens. Pastel on paper colorful abstract pastel drawing, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, signed illegibly at lower right. The work is very modern and there's a lot of energy in the dramatic forms. No doubt this was created in the 1980's to maybe just a few years ago. The artist's signature is difficult to make out. The work is a fine example by this talented woman artist, the cramped artistic space and carefully thought-out arrangement of the objects in that space indicative of an artist of great talent who is taking from Cezanne as well as the WPA (I would guess the age as circa 1930's or 1940's). ...

Images of the work have been examined by the recognized authority on Clark; he can provide me with a letter attesting to the authenticity of the piece. The scene is likely to be of Colorado as there is an old framer's sticker from Turner Art Gallery of Denver. Below that is what appears to be a date, in pencil, "2-19-31". American circa 1910 or at least early twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of grapes, apples and a banana, 17" by 20 3/4" framed in an oval, unsigned. The work is typical of pastel still life of the period, though I do not believe it by the "Chandler" workshop. Modest homes of the period were lucky to have an original work of art rather than a print. This one has survived in very good condition. Measuring 7 3/8" by 11 1/2" inside the present mat (12 5/8" by 17 1/2" as framed), the image is of a bison with a stylized sun at upper left, and scattered stylized trees, with a multi story adobe at lower right serving as the Pueblo itself. On the reverse is written "Age 13/Taos Day School/New,Mexico 87511/Taos Pueblo/U.S.A.". Medium seems to ...

Vintage charming pastel on old paper, 12" by 8", the scene a quiet city street or lane with 19th century buildings, signed at lower right by the artist, E. R. VAN DEMAN, and dated 1901. Rather little information on the artist appears on the net, but a member of the board of the Delaware County Historical Society in Ohio contacted me to say that the organization has seven of her pastels in their collection, the subjects local places circa 1900. The artist was from a prominent Delaware, Ohio fa...

A PAIR of early portraits in pastel on paper, of a middle-aged man and woman (about 45 or 50 years of age), the male portrait signed along the lower right edge "E. Yohn 1841". The works measure 20 3/4" by 17 3/4" as framed. Considering the advanced age, condition of these fragile works is excellent. There is a small edge tear at extreme upper edge of the female portrait. They were framed years ago without a mat, the pastel in near or direct contact with the glass, but there does not appear t...

Pastel on paper, 20" by 25" and silvery frame 3 3/4" wide on a side, the subject a schnauzer dog in an arid mountain landscape possibly in the Palm Springs, California area. The drawing is by an artist skilled in the use of pastel. JOSEPHINE CRUMRINE (1917-2005) of Alaska was perhaps best known for her work depicting Eskimos and other familiar Alaska themes such as sled for the menus of the Alaska Steamship Company, but she also experimented with other subject matter. I recently sold a scene ...

For the collector of vintage plein air art, this is a classic drawing on tan paper executed in Italy in the year 1924 by well listed, frequently auctioned California plein air artist DANA BARTLETT (1882-1957). This drawing measures 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the framing (12 3/8" by 15 1/4" as framed). It is signed in a longhand signature at lower left, and at lower right is inscribed "Venice Italy" and the date 1924 once again. An old plaque bearing the artist's name also reads "Santa Lucia Br...

Pastel and gouache mixed media work on red paper, measuring 18 1/4" by 13 1/2" plus thin old black wood frame, signed at lower right with what appears to be "Macero Arbuckle" and dated '04 (1904). I don't see any information on the artist. This is an interesting illustration work that is quite subtle, and being subtle, doesn't lend itself to being photographed easily. Condition is excellent. There is an old sticker on glass at lower left corner with "13" written on it.

Pastel on paper laid on thick paperboard, 22" by 18", unframed, signed at lower left and dated 1921 by the artist, DAVID COMBA ADAMSON (1859-1926). In this drawing the artist shows his skill with the pastel medium. This is a sensitive portrait of an attractive young lady against an interesting striped pattern background, a red rose before her. There is no indication as to who she might have been (no writing/labels on reverse). The artist studied in Paris and lived and worked there for a time...

If one conducts an internet search for the English twentieth century artist Bettina Shaw-Lawrence, one finds her name mingled with some of England's modern art greats, (and literature notables, as well), she knew Lucian Freud, Cedric Morris, David Kentish, the Surrealist poet David Gascoyne.......and studied with the likes of Fernand Leger and Ossip Zadkine. The artist passed away in Italy in 2018 at the age of 97, and her art is seemingly ignored by the auction world, but, as part of the East ...

Signed at lower right "Gillette", this is by an American artist who was a member of the early century pastel school, now best known for works by William Henry Chandler, Glatthaar, Gunderson, and others. They generally created landscapes ...

**PAIR** of pastel and pencil drawings on paper affixed to board at edges, each 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, currently in simple contemporary inexpensive frames, one signed in pencil at lower right "GROLL". These appear to be possibly scenes of Mexico or even Spain (the artist studied in Europe) by listed American artist ALBERT LOREY GROLL (1866-1952). Groll was New York-born, but spent a lot of time in Arizona, New Mexico and other points of the far west, painting and drawing the expansi...
