A watercolor of the year 2006, signed "Rogers", featuring a close-up architectural view of the upper part of a church or cathedral. The spires and domes kind of resemble a famous church in Venice, Italy, though the scene could be almost anywhere in southern Europe or Latin America. The unframed work measures 6 5/8" by 11 1/2" inside the dark blue over-mat. That mat has a little wear but could be retained if you just want to frame over it for a smaller opening.

A detailed 19th century American botanical watercolor of white roses and leaves, unsigned, circa 1880, measuring 9 3/4" by 6 1/4" inside the mat, 16 3/4" by 12 1/2" as framed. The piece is in good antique condition with light foxing and uneven toning in the background, commonly seen in works of this age, and perhaps a small tear that has browned at left edge. The work could be on a silky material rather than paper. The detail is impressive. French mat parallel lines at to the appeal...

A beautifully painted pair of framed watercolour photo renderings c1880-1900. They consist of a young man and woman in mid-Victorian dress; each image is done on Victorian photographic print paper and they measure 6-3/4" x 4-3/4"...

Watercolor on paper painting of redwood, sequoia or pine tree trunk in a forest, unframed, 9 1/4" by 7 3/4", signed at lower left "Mary Inez Tidwell". The work is possibly a fragment, as the top edge and right edge in particular seem to indicate that there might have been more painting at one time; however, there are pin holes in the upper corners and indications of round tacks having been there, so possibly the painting is as originally created...

Pastel drawing of trees in early autumn by a large body of water, signed at lower right M. Moore, measuring 13 1/2" by 19" (21" by 26" framed). The viewer is reminded of Canadian art--landscapes of Ontario in the fall, for example--though this might just be a generic scene from the imagination of the artist. A colorful original work with considerable decorative quality. The drawing is slipping around a bit under the mat so will have to be re-affixed to backing.

**One of a number of Venice works in my shop** Watercolor painting of a classic Venetian view including canal gondola and the famous church in the background, 4 1/2" by 7 1/2" (10" by 13 1/4" as framed without glass), signed at lower right corner "G. Romanello". This is a twentieth century work, perhaps from the 1950's, or, possibly, earlier. I do not see a listing for the name...

Oil on thin linen canvas or possibly silk, 17" by 21" as simply framed, unsigned, probably circa 1930's to 1950's, the subject red and white roses. This was of course a favorite subject from about the turn of the century well into the twentieth, and today this kind of art is favored by those creating a shabby chic look. The present work has some wrinkling/rippling in the creamy unpainted background, as seen in the photos...

Ca 1940 A vibrant watercolor framed under glass and signed Munir. The frame measures 12" x 16"; the picture, approximately 6-3/4" x 11". Not examined out of frame.

Watercolor on paper painting, 10 1/2" by 13 1/2" (18 1/4" by 21" framed), signed at lower right "J.C. MIDDLETON.", the subject a suburban boathouse in a neighborhood, possibly in southeast England. Middleton painted in oil and watercolor in Surrey, greater London, and Cornwall, as well as South Africa, apparently, as a number of works from Cape Town are known. The artist was skilled in watercolor, as this painting shows a sure hand.

This is a relatively earlier (1976 or before) work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996). Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled with tourists when they returned from holidays. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors. Birdsey worked in gouache or possibly oil or acrylic on paper...

An original watercolor painting of a pueblo in New Mexico against a dark blue sky, traditional pots displayed in foreground. The work, 13 3/4" by 10" on heavy watercolor paper (24 3/4" by 20 1/2" framed) is unsigned. It dates to the late 20th century and was likely created by a talented amateur artist, perhaps for the tourist trade. The designs on the pottery suggests this is possibly Zia Pueblo.

Watercolor on heavy paper landscape with house on a moor at sunset, a distant hill at left and blooming white wildflowers in the foreground, measuring 8 3/4" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 17" by 20" in a simple old wood frame, and signed with initials that look to me like "R.E.M."---but this is just a guess. The piece likely was created in the last years of the nineteenth or early years of the 20th century. The shape of the house suggests to me an English rather than American origin...

A PAIR of watercolor paintings framed as one, in black and white, each signed lower corner "CC" or "LL", likely late 19th century or early 20th. Each measures 2 1/4" by 3 1/4" (12 1/2" by 9" as framed). There is no information inside on the identity of the talented artist. Silvery frame and hand drawn mat makes for a very elegant little piece.

Watercolor and ink drawing of the iconic world-class sight, the Parthenon atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The work is signed in red in Greek at lower right and there is an inscription in Greek handwriting on the reverse. Measurements inside the deep blue mat are 10 1/2" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 13" in simple undistinguished strip frame). The artist has captured with considerable skill a sight that will never be forgotten by anyone who has seen it.

A small very nicely painted contemporary work in watercolor and gouache, the subject water's edge with tidal rocks and sand. Measuring 10 1/2" by 12 3/4" framed and nicely matted, the work is signed at lower left corner by artist "Greenaway". The framing sticker on the reverse from San Luis Obispo suggests the possibility that the scene is somewhere on the central California coast.

Watercolor on paper, with skilled use of wet-on-wet technique, 19" by 27" (31" by 38" as framed), the subject quite possibly a city with figures, (but that is just a guess---only the artist knew for sure), signed at lower right "G. Benaroyo" (or "Benaroya") and dated there 1962. I believe Benaroyo or Benaroya is a Jewish surname, and I discovered upon opening this up that there is writing in Hebrew on the back of the work, the words "Benaroya landscape" and the original $150 price...

Watercolor painting of some age, 13" by 10 1/2" (22" by 18" framed), the subject simply a tree, but, that subject is handled very beautifully, and the work is signed at lower right by artist Paula Day (on whom I find no information). The interpretation of light and color belies the hand of a talented artist. Judging from the framing materials this dates no later than the mid 1960's and likely earlier. I recommend a new mat only; the frame can be retained.

A watercolor painting of pine or cypress trees on the coast, perhaps a place like Carmel or Santa Barbara, measuring 14 3/4" by 18 3/4" (20" by 23 1/2" framed). The work is unsigned, (I have opened it up to peek inside, no writing anywhere) and judging from the framing it could date to the 1970's or 1960's. The artist used quality Arches paper (see blind stamp of same). The painting is clean and problem-free; over the years it has slipped inside its mat so will have to be probably re-affixed.
