Lithograph on paper, unframed, the sheet 13 3/4" by 17 3/4", pencil signed at lower left and dated there 1949, and signed again in Hebrew and dated 1949 at lower right in pencil, by the noted Russian-born Israeli artist MIRON SIMA (1902-1999). According to a Wikipedia listing, Sima was born in Czarist Russia shtetl in 1902. By 1921 he was in Odessa, Russia for art study, and the following year saw him in Dresden, Germany...

Acquired from the recent liquidation of the extensive estate of actor Charlton Heston and his wife Lydia, this is an original photograph, unsigned/unattributed, measuring 13 1/2" by 17 3/4", unframed, in a clean white mat. There are a number of contemporary notations in pencil on the mat, including "STILL LIFE MID 1920", and a $300 asking price. The photo seems to be perhaps earlier, so "circa 1900" might be reasonable...

Sir Francis Seymour Haden was one of the most important British etchers of the 19th century, along with his brother in law James Whistler. Another of Maki's all-white prints, this one is of a Chinese coin. wu wei zhi zu Frame 5 shows the Han dynasty coin which inspired this 1981 print.

It has taken some research on the net to determine that this unusual item is apparently an early 20th century facsimile of an incunabula (pre 1500 printing) leaf from a book. JOHANN GRUENINGER (1455-1533) was a major, prolific early German printer and publisher, who developed an innovative method for illustrating books. This sheet on rag type paper measures 11" by 8". There is text in old Latin, and an image of the Trojan Horse outside of Troy, the soldiers entering his side...

In 1960 Maki did the image shown. It is called Symbol. In all the years of collecting Maki prints and images I have never seen this one again. It is quite large but seems cluttered. Forty years later he did it as a print and a post card even as one friend has suggested he did the print before 1999, the date on the print. The seals are authentic not printed, and they are original Maki seals from well-used chops.

Haku Maki did many prints some with interesting backgrounds some not. This modest run of rather large pints had a special black background: it is the texture of old leather. .
