Early 19th century Japanese pottery kogo - box for incense used during tea ceremony - in a form of of a puppy wearing a collar and playing with a cloth ball. Wonderful potting with perfectly captured mood of the scene, beautifully sculpted chubby body and coiled tail. Unusual early piece with only the ball and the collar glazed, the rest of the body is not giving it a warmer and more alive texture. Compressed dust on the surface, wonderful patina, in great condition. Length 2 13/16 inches.

Unlike many of the pieces in the genre of Kyo-ware, this tea bowl is decidedly demure in appearance. Milky, flowing glaze pools in places along a backdrop of ivory and coral pink sides, contrasting nicely with the rough, unrefined clay of the base.
