A large archaic style bronze (copper tin alloy) incense burner on three legs with lion head terminals and with tall flared flange edged handles. The body is decorated in relief with the Eight Daoist Immortals and above them, centrally, on the front is Shou Lao / Shou Xing, the Star God of Longevity, seated on a recumbent deer.

This item was probably used on a home or temple altar dedicated to the veneration of ancestors.

This censer was made in China in the Ming Dynasty, possibly during the late 15th or early 16th Century. Similarly shaped stoneware tripod incense burners, some dated, were made in this period. The wood stand and cover are possibly contemporary with the incense burner. The soapstone lotus finial is carved in Ming dynasty style.

Condition: the casting is crude with typical minor losses ; additionally the two back facing immortals have been decapitated.

明 八仙双耳三足香炉

三足上有狮首,冲天冠双耳。炉身八仙纹饰,八仙之上正中是寿星和他的坐骑白鹿。应为祠堂宗庙祭祖所用。

此炉做于明代,具体时间可能为15世纪末16世纪初。部分有记录的类似形制的炻器三足炉也做于此时期。木座和炉盖可能为同时期所做。炉盖上的寿山石莲花纹钮也为明代风格。

品相:铸造工艺比较粗糙,细微部分有金属脱落导致的细孔。炉身背面两个人物的头部缺失。带座高32厘米,不带座高23厘米。宽19.5厘米。 重:不带座和炉盖,重2.36公斤。

A pair of porcelain vases, each with globular body and tall cylindrical neck, covered with an even, dark, slightly iridescent apple-green crackled glaze. One of the vases has a white foot rim and is white deep inside; the other is "burned" (iron oxide) orange on the foot rim and inside. These items were made in China, in the mid Qing dynasty, during either the late 18th or early 19th Century.

The collector's labels on the bases carry the name W.A. Stewart who is recorded as having worked for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. These vases were purchased in a UK auction in 2003.

Condition - excellent - there are some surface scratches but there are no damages and there has been no restoration.

A very rare and unusual parrot form bronze (copper tin alloy) incense burner made in China in the late Ming Dynasty, probably circa 1620 to 1640, during either the Tianqi or Chongzhen reigns. This item is partially coated with old black lacquer.

Condition: the cover is missing; and there are losses to the tip of the tail.

21.5 cm / 8,5 inches high / 15 cm / 6 inches across.

A rare 'ogee-shaped' bowl finely decorated in Chinese taste with four Chilong dragons amongst scrolling lotus foliage in Wucai enamels on the outside. The interior is decorated in typical early 18th Century 'Famille Verte' export style with Lotus, Chrysanthemum and Peony flowers and Buddhistic Emblems. This item was made during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662 - 1722). Condition - there is a European made protective metal rim; there is a chip to the rim and two associated 1cm and 2cm hairlines (please see enlargement 7). There has been no restoration. 7cm (2.5 inches) high; 21cm (8.25 inches) diameter.

A porcelain plate painted in shades of under glaze cobalt blue, in traditional Chinese taste, depicting two ducks swimming on a pond swimming on a pond surrounded with aquatic plants. On the base is a six character reign mark of the Kangxi emperor within a double circle which reads "Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi" ("Great Qing Kangxi Year Made). This plate was made in the late 17th Century, circa 1690, during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722). Unusually for a 'Mark and Period' piece this plate is a European shape and was probably made for export. A similar plate is to be found in the 1997 catalogue of S. Marchant & Son, Kensington Church Street, London W8. Condition: Excellent - no damages and no restoration 21cm (8.25 inches) diameter. A rare pair of heavy (solid) underglaze cobalt blue decorated porcelain Shishi Lions (koma inu 狛犬) made in the Hirado kilns, Mikawachi, Japan during the later years of the Edo period. Although previously thought to have been made late in the Meiji period (1868-1911) recent scholarship, by (among others) the late David Hyatt-King, is now indicating that these koma inu were made much earlier, circa 1820-1850.

Condition: the openwork brocade ball under the paws of the female (with closed mouth) has been broken off and re-joined with an old (glue-less) lead strap work repair and there are small pieces missing from the back of the ball. Both lions have firing cracks to the base. No additional damages and there has been no restoration. 15 cm (6 inches) long; 10 cm (4 inches) high.

日本平户烧狮子一对 江户晚期 1820-1850

一对厚重的钴蓝青花瓷狮子(狛犬),作于江户晚期的日本三川内的平户窑。虽然之前一直认为输出作于明治晚期,但是著名已故日本瓷器收藏家David Hyatt-King及其他研究者的近期研究表明,这些狛犬像应作于更早期,约1820-1850年间。

品相:雌狮(未张口)爪下镂空的绣球部分有部分脱落,并被用铅丝重新连接固定,绣球背面也有部分缺失。

两只狮子底部都有烧制时留下的自然裂痕。无其他损伤,无修复。

A large heavy bottle vase depicting two confronting five clawed dragons amongst clouds and flames and above breaking waves. The base carries the six character seal mark of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795)but possibly made later during the 19th Century. It arrived in the UK before 1910 and is from an old West Country estate. Condition - the neck has been reduced and polished. There are no chips or cracks and there has been no restoration but there are surface scratches. Height 23cm (9 inches); 24cm (9.5 inches) wide. Weight 2.6 kg (5.73lb).

A rare bronze (copper & tin alloy) incense burner in the form of a Qilin made in China during the late Ming period.

Condition: the cover is missing and there is a small hole in the base; there is copper oxidation inside the tail and there are traces of the original black lacquer coating between its scales and in some of the recesses.

County Magistrate of Jiang Yin County (probably Jiangsu province) - Wu Long Zhou; Confucian School Head Teacher - Chen Xuan; Teaching Assistant - Wei Kun and School Students Du Lang and others commissioned to make".

Condition - both handles are missing.

A rare Indonesian Keris/Kriss with very old short wavy pamir/pamor steel blade. The Javanese style hilt has a white metal (probably silver) fitting set with flat back - "rose cut" - diamonds. For similar diamond fitting please see fig 10a, page 385 - "Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor" by George Cameron Stone, 1934 - pub 1961 by Jack Brussel (New York). Condition - the tip of the blade is missing and there are two chips and an age related crack to the wooden hilt. Total length 19.25 inches (49cm). Length of blade 12 inches (30cm)

A rare and finely carved hardwood figure group depicting the reclining Buddai with three small boys together with its original wood stand. This item was made in China in the 18th century during the reign of the Qianlong emperor (1736-1795). Condition: generally very good but the tip of the Buddai's left foot is missing and the boy on the far right has been broken and re-glued (with a 2mm section of his fore arm missing) and there is a small chip to the robe covering the Buddai's right leg; no further damages and no replacements or restoration. 9cm (3.5inches) high; 20cm (8inches) high. A rare dedicated souvenir "Turban Shell" (Latin: Turbo Marmoratus) hand engraved, onboard ship, "with a penknife" by C H Wood. This presentation piece was commisioned by the ship's Chief Engineer William Driver, for his brother Charles in 1866, to commemorate the laying of the transatlantc telegraph cable. The Great Eastern, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was an iron steam sailing ship which, from it's 1858 launch until 1899, was the largest ship ever built. The inscriptions, in addition to the ship's dimensions, read: "A Present from the Gt Eastern (Lying in the River Mersey)." "To Charles Driver from his brother William" "As a gratifying remembrance of laying the submarine Telegraph Cable of 1866 from England and America, and recovering the last Cable of 1865. And with triumphant success accomplished the laying of that also" "J Anderson Commander" (Sir James Anderson was Captain of the Great Eastern from 1865 to 1866) "W Driver Chief Engineer S crew" signed Eng "With a penknife by C Wood. Condition: very good. There is a crack to the inside of the mouth which, for the most part, is not visible on the outside. A rare gourd shaped bronze (copper tin alloy) vase decorated in archaic style with leiwen (thunder) pattern motifs and a band of stylized waves.

This item was made in China in the 12th to 14th Century during the late Song or Yuan dynasties when ancient Shang and Zhou bronzes were unearthed and collected. This was a time when large numbers of antique inspired bronze vessels were produced. Huge quantities were subsequently exported to japan where many were used domestically as flower containers.

Condition: there are bumps and dents to the lower wave decorated zone.

16 cm / 7 inches high.

A larger than average ovoid jar (without cover) profusely decorated with Famille Rose enamels depicting stylized lotus scrolls enclosing two large panels and two small peach shaped panels. The panels are painted with peony, lotus and other flowers; one panel depicts an egret amongst water plants. This item was made in China in the late 18th or early 19th Century, circa 1790-1820 during the Qianlong or Jiaqing reign. Condition - there is wear and some losses to the enamels but there are no chips, no cracks and there has been no restoration. 26.5cm (10.3inches) high.
