This is a rare example of a Puddingstone, not only because of its form, but also, because of the color, shape, and texture of the particles that make up the stone.

A bottle of similar form may be found in Steven's 'The Collector's book of Snuff Bottles" #618, minus the mask handles, which he dates to late 18th, early 19th centuries.

According to Stevens, puddingstones are 'conglomerates of sedimentary rocks, composed of a cementing matrix holding numerous rounded pebbles, which vary in size, shape, color, textures, hardness, and mineral content.

This bottle has a thick Bulbous rectangular form with rounded edges, thick straight neck, wide lips and mouth, and recessed oval footing.

Its rare color and the shape and texture of the particles within the stone are similar to those shown in a bottle listed as #612 in Stevens book, mentioned above. I haven't seen a similar example in any other snuff bottle book or published collection. It is reasonably well-hollowed, although its size and proportion enables it to also have thick walls.

It comes with a red aventurine stopper with metal collar. It is in excellent preserved condition.

18th Century, Japanese Boxwood Netsuke: Recumbent Dog

18th Century, nicely hand-carved Boxwood Netsuke depicting a recumbent Dog that appears to be pleasantly resting. Very nice stylized touches characterizes this netsuke made during the EDO Period of Japan. Unsigned. A bit larger than most netsuke of this type, with large himotoshi, common of carvings made during the 18th century, and beginning of the 19th century..

This type of netsuke were referenced in an article written by Jay Hopkins in the Kenkyukai Journal 12/2 of Summer 1992, where they were said to have been made by the ‘Abstract Monkey Carver’, where he described them as: “It is not that these examples are masterpieces but they have their own simple charm. When first encountered they produce a smile - certainly one of the most endearing and enduring qualities of a netsuke. Moreover, examples have been included in some of the finest collections.

Very rich dark patina, as well as silky smooth surface, derived from polishing and handling. Netsuke measures 1.15 inches (2.9cm) wide, 2.64 inches (6.7cm) long, and 0.78 inches (2.0cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos..

18th Century Japanese Wood Tall Netsuke: Gama Sennin

18th Century, excellently hand-carved Boxwood Netsuke depicting a standing Gama, wearing the typical mugwort cape with wide sleeves, and a rope tied at his waist, holding a staff with his right hand, and carrying a three-legged toad (that possesses magical powers) on top of his left shoulder. Very interesting himotoshi that starts in the back of the Sennin and exits on the left side of his body (see photo #8). Very rich, dark, lustrous patina. Unsigned.

* Oversized or tall netsuke are extremely rare. According to Yakari Yoshida, in a 1999 International Netsuke Society Journal article, this type of netsuke make up approximately only one percent or less of all netsuke held at major collections. According to the author, most of these netsuke were made in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and among the subjects represented by these tall miniature sculptures are Sennin and foreigners, such as the theme of the carving listed here.
