This pottery bowl, or jar, was made over 4,000 years ago during the Machang Phase (c. 2300 - 2000 BC) of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. Featuring a globular body with a short waisted neck that flares out to a flanged rim which is slightly depressed in the center with two loop handles on opposite sides of its shoulders. The vessel is covered overall in an olive green yue-type celadon glaze, except for its base, exposing its grey stoneware clay.

Very rare pottery bowl and eclectic with Taoist imagery. This is made from a high fired light gray pottery, with traces of a white slip and depictions of musicians, dancers and “demon” masks. This is a funerary piece; the symbology suggests the transition from this world to the afterlife. D: 14cm/5.5in and H: 5.2cm/2in. No cracks original pigments with some kiln warpage
A large earthenware wine jar,Hu, with green lead glaze much of which is covered with a silvery iridescence(caused by long burial and exposure to moisture). On the shoulder is a low relief moulded frieze depicting a number of animals and a figure on horseback in what is possibly a hunting scene. On each side are animal masks with rings - in a style similar to contemporary door knockers. This item was made circa 100 BC - 8 AD...
This is a painted earthenware double-loop handled vase of a type generally classified as Majiayao culture (Machang style). The piece measures just under 5-1/2" inches high and is completely intact and free of repair. Exceptional root marking is visible on the surface which is painted in a series of loops and swirls. Beautifully potted example.
