19th century netsuke of a bamboo shoot containing a hollow section with anabori (cavern carving) of the Seven Sages of the bamboo grove looking at an open scroll. (see the detail on the first photo), The inside is almost impossible to photograph, but all the sages are there, need a flashlight even to see them. Very clever joke on the usual depiction of the sages being placed among bamboo stalks, not inside them...

Japanese Imari Porcelain Lunch box/Jubaco with three(3) compartment with lid, 7 3/4" high with lid, 5 1/2" diameter and 2 1/8" high, 5 1/2" diameter for each compartment, Ca. 1920, decorated with typical Imari colors with character of "Happiness". Two(2) flake shallow enamel chips in red character area which is normal wear and tear over the years, overall in good condition.

Antique Japanese bronze lantern with "braid" and crosshatch style sides, a hinged door with locking latch, roof style top, and sitting on four legs. Great patina. Size: 12" height, 10,5" width

A small sized kiri or paulownia wood tansu with iron decorative fittings and locks surrounding the drawers and the sides of the tansu. The locks are decorated with motifs in the form of a plant and curved features for the side fittings. The bottom of all the drawers contain an inscription of which drawer goes where and the name of the previous owner...

A striking Peacock feather colored flambe glazed vase by Leading Kyoto Potter Uno Ninmatsu enclosed in a signed wooden box dated the 10th month of Showa 5 (October 1930). It is 28 cm tall and in excellent condition.
Uno Ninmatsu (1864-1937) was born in Kyoto son of potter Wada Sohei and studied under his father as well as from a young age Seifu Yohei II then future Imperial Art Academy artist Seifu Yohei III until setting up his own studio at the age of 21...

These very well carved and polished crabs are a late Meiji period product. They are about 4” wide, 2 ½” high and 1 ½” thick. Aside from some small old repair and hair line cracks due to their age, they are in great condition.

Charming Japanese school desk in a long bench style, with coat hangers on each side. The top of the desk has an inkwell and a dip for storing pens. The desk's surface has multiple carvings done by school children, such as an arrow through a heart containing a short love sentiment in kanji. Handle rest cut from a half section of bamboo, skillfully sculpted with lotus flowers on an aquatic background. In a small spared rectangle, the artist incised his name in 2 Chinese characters. The quality of the sculpture is beautiful, precise and deep, some stems are completely detached from the base. The old patina is superb. The decor, although cluttered, is very elegant. This is an excellent quality handle rest executed for a scholar by a good artist...

Antique Japanese trunk made of kiri (paulownia) wood with a deep red finish, bordered in black lacquer. Two iron handles are at its sides, a gourd-shaped iron lock decorates the front. The blonde interior has been marked with kanji. Edo age (1615-1867) Size: 22" height, 34" width, 15.5" depth

DESCRIPTION: A Japanese Sumida vase with round neck covered in a rich, thick flambé glaze running to the shoulders, with a high relief figure of a monkey balanced on a rocky ledge. In his right hand the monkey holds a peach (symbol of longevity) he has pulled from a green vase; these are all contrasted against the ribbed red body of the vase. Excellent condition with no chips; signed "Ryosai" on the base...

An antique Japanese Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Aka Matsu (Red Pine) woods. Beautiful original hand forged iron hardware and Urushi lacquer finish. Two full width drawers and sliding doors with horizontal slats that hide three small drawers on the right and a business books and records storage area on the left. Upper drawer features a lucky treasure bag lock plate with a stylized Mt Fuji lock plate below...

Signature of the illustrious family of Kajikawa lacquerers in 3 characters or in relief followed by a drawing of a vase in red lacquer also in relief. Kyo-Ji-Ro (+1682) was the founder and the best of the line of Kaji-Kawa lacquerers, his descendants all bore the same name...

This is a kagura costume made in the Tohoku region during the Meiji period. Kagura is a dance dedicated to the gods. Several types of pigments are used to paint this item. They are gold, green, bengara-red, yellow, white, brown and black. After first being dyed in beautiful indigo by Tsutsugaki, the painting is then painted freehand using pigments. Pair of early 19th century Japanese sword menuki depicting two dancers - a samurai with sword, and a merchant with fan. There is a nice detail for a netsuke lover - merchant is wearing an inro suspended by a gourd netsuke. Elegant design, superb detailing with gilding, in excellent condition. Fantastic example of Japanese metalwork. Height 1 1/8 inches.
