A very large authentic Tang tomb guardian wearing a typical warrior's uniform standing on an evil earth creature with remains of the original pigments. The guardian was there to protect the tomb from these evil creatures. The item was found with its parts separated.Large statues like this were made in several parts. See last photo. Antique Tibetan carved wooden phurba, a ritualistic Vajrayana Buddhist implement, depicting Nagas or snakes on the blade. Nagas are the entities in nature that associated with illnesses. The entwining serpents are a symbol of medicine and healing. The deity handle, mirroring the three-edges of the blade has three deity faces. Typically, one might be wrathful, one peaceful and one joyful representing Body, Speech and Mind.

Japanese Arita porcelain square sake bottle with Dutch Kakiemon decoration. The bottle is square with a short waisted neck and everted lip. Each side is painted with unique images of birds, flowers and plants. The color scheme is iron-red, turquoise, blue and green with some gold. Minor wear consistent with age. Tibetan repousse copper polychrome mask of Yamataka , a horned yak headed deity wearing a crown of three skulls on its head. Gold gilt ground and painted pigment accentuate the expression of the Yamataka mask.

Yamataka is a violent aspect of the Bodhisattva Manjushri, who assumes this form to vanquish Yama, the god of death. By defeating Yama, the cycle of rebirth (samsara) that prevents enlightenment is broken...

Chinese porcelain planter in a squared form tapering slightly towards the base, incised with imagery of birds perching, grapes and coiling vines, blooming flowers against a yellow enamel ground. The upper and lower part of the planter with bands of archaic scrolls in cobalt blue. The rim has red floral scrolling motifs. The base is marked "China" in red. With dense carved wooden stand of an inverted lotus form.

Beautiful and Rare 19th Century Korean Elm Wood Document Box from Gyeongsangnam-do, with a patina and grain of gorgeous color and texture and lovely floral metalwork with plum blossoms (a symbol of courage because the plum blossoms early, before winter is quite finished) and chrysanthemum (a symbol of plenty or fertility because of its many petals). Rare Chinese eggshell thin Dingyao porcelain bowl, the interior molded with relief details of scrolling chrysanthemums and leaves. The sides of the bowl flare widely from the small and shallow foot and the rim left unglazed.

Provenance: historic Noble family in North Berkeley, whose grandparents were missionaries in Korea in the 19th century.

Ancient Indian Jain religious shrine, the central Jina surrounded by multiple celestial nymphs with two elephants at the top on either side of the canopy. This brass with inlaid silver sculpture has ancient Devanagari script over the entire back. The Jinas eyes and central chest are silver inlaid. Rubbed and some losses.

Shufu is a rare Chinese white porcelain that was made during the Yuan dynasty (1206-1368) in Hutian village just outside the city of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province. Thought to be the first known porcelain ordered by imperial officials. The body of the ware is covered with a soft, white, bluish opaque glaze similar to qingbai, but contained less calcium oxide resulting in slight translucency rather than transparency...

This is the Tsutsugaki curtain used in the Edo period. This was made in the Kyushu region. It is made of fine cotton that is hand spun. This is a person expressing a wooden raft that flows through the river in the season when the cherry blossoms fall. This pattern is a pattern called flower raft. This is a very idyllic depiction of the boatman's expression. The design of the boatman on the raft to go down the river where the cherry blossoms are falling is very elegant and beautiful...

Chinese eggshell thin ding ware porcelain bowl, with celadon crackle glaze that ends just below the rim, left in bare porcelain. Inside the bowl, the well has a deeply incised outline contrasting with the inner walls of the bowl. The outer edges of the bowl are carved with delicate floral scrolls.

Whip design continues on the back showing an attendant boy, one hand raised in amazement, the other holding a fan. Very unusual subject of a Lucky God as an actor, the whip is a clear reference to a mythical nine-tailed fox...

A rare and unusual Japanese Keyaki burl choba tansu with original dark red translucent lacquer finish. The front of the chest has two hinged doors with hand forged iron fan lock plate, with two drawers below. When the chest is opened, it reveals a spacious interior with a large open compartment, a long top drawer and three smaller all burl wood drawers along the side.

The scene represents a street entertainer, in this case a man who tickles himself with a stick and sneezes for the delight of the audience. The lingzhi symbolizes good health and longevity, as depicted in the imperial Forbidden City and Summer Palace.
