Incredible Indo/Persian hand painted, oil on paper, manuscript page, depicting a courting maiden with attendant and suitor with calligraphy. Circa late 19th century period. Mounted in gold and black painted frame with matting. It measures approx. 10" height x 7 1/4" width. Condition is consistent with age.

This representation of the female deity in seated position retains its old brown patina with areas of verdigris both on the exterior of the image as well as the interior of the base. The phurpa is made of wood, and is decorated in relief from top to bottom with three deities heads surmounted by a point, above geometric designs of chevrons and knots, themselves on top of the three blades decorated with snake design in relief. Tibetan Himalayan Match Striker, Coral and Turquoise natural stones set in the embossed and high relief decorated hard Silver and Brass borders on Yak Skin Leather, 3 5/8" high without ring, 6" wide steel striker. The heavy hard Silver top is also decorated with fine designs which shows the wear. Six metal buttons are studded on the back, surrounded with decorated Hard Silver borders. The leather inside is dyed light red color. The condition is good.

This antique copper reposse gau houses a picture instead of a clay tsa tsa which was common for a family gau. when the family could afford to do so, the picture would be replaced by a clay tsatsa. Curiously, this gau also houses 2 amulets, which were typically provided by a monk. The paper is very old and I am told it is bad Karma to unfold the amulet.

A rare Kashmir teapot with hinged lid standing on three small feet. The metal base, here copper or bronze, was first engraved with special tools to create the design in relief, the grooves were later filled with glass and then embellished with additional engraving and shiny gilding. This technique is called in India "meena" or "meenakari" and was first applied by the Mughal. With a small handwritten note explaining its provenance. Dimension: 20.8 cm long, 14 cm high, weight: 688 g.

This antique copper gau would have been kept in a prayer niche in the home and would be worn as an ornament for festival. In place of the Tsatsa (clay figure), there is a Tsakli. It was common practice to use a tsakli (small picture card) to represent the religious item which would be placed in the gau, when time and money became available. The original written talisman remains inside the gau also.

A very rare small box, made of embossed brass, lavishly decorated with various designs on its lid and body. On the lower part of its body the design is a series of "niches" containing effigies of deities and also the portrait in profile of an important person, probably a king. Superb dark-green and reddish patina. Tibetan characters beneath. Tibet, 17th century. Height: 3 3/8" (8,7 cm). il. Superbe patine.

This antique type of metal work was common in Nepal during the 1800's and into the early 1900's. The birds beak is carved from bone which is dyed to color. The "jewels" are colored glass i.e. enamel drops of orange, turquoise and dark brown. Beak to tail tip the bird measures 3.5 inches and stands 2 inches high. Very good condition with one "jewel" missing on the side.

Indian statue of a jain buddha seated in meditation with hands and feet crossed carved out of white marble. The base has a weathered donatory inscription with a horned bull or possibly a rhino in the middle. If a rhinocerous, the statue would be of Mahavira in the 11th reincarnation. Traces of red pigment. The nose was broken during the muslim invasions of India sometime between the 13th and 16th centuries. From the Mt. Abu region, 15th-16th century. It measures 13"deep, 26" wide 30" tall.
