Slightly distorted cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay. Shape and style make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls. The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical black oniita engobe inside and outside - with the exception of the bottom - over which a white, feldspatic Shino glaze has been poured.

This very well carved late 19th century ivory netsuke is 1 ¼” high, 2 ¼” wide and 2“ thick. It depicts an old samurai’s metal helmet decorated with shi-shi (lion) head on top. The helmet is situated on an opened paper fan. There are a dozen mice with inlaid eyes on the helmet playing and chasing each other. This unusually shaped carved bone snuff bottle is a late Meiji period (1867~1911) product. It is 2 3/4” long, 1 ¼” wide and ¾” thick. It depicts a curled shrimp as the body of snuff bottle. The bamboo spoon is a replacement. It has a great patina and is in great condition.

Many stories were written about the rising power of the samurai class in late 12th century Japan. Kanjincho, the Kabuki adaptation of the Noh play, Ataka, was first performed at the end of the Edo period in 1840.
