From our Southeast Asia Collection, a large and classic 19th century Burmese Hsun-ok from Pagan, of well- known and documented form, constructed of wood that is first lacquered in black, and then covered in successive layers of cinnabar-colored lacquer called hinthabada. Over time, through use and handling, the cinnabar lacquer wears off to reveal the black lacquer base underneath as seen on this example, in an effect likened to the negoro effect seen in Japanese lacquerware...

This box would have been used to display sacred Buddhist Sutra or text book. The importance of the contents is indicated by the viewing windows on front, back, top and sides of the box. The exterior of the box is covered with black lacquer and over-painted with gold. It is painted red on the inside.

There is some minimal paint loss, which is to be expected in a piece of this age. 24 inches(60 cm) long 5 inches (12 cm) high

A set of rare and complete Burmese manuscript (KAMMAVACA) made from thick cloth coated with gold and lacquer in nice condition. It was written in the Pali language using Burmese script. The square letters were written in thick and black cinnabar lacquer. This set has 16 leaves and 2 wooden covers made from teak wood. Each leave was inscribed on both sides with illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology on some leaves...

An elaborate and intricate Burmese shrine or altar. The shrine proper is encased in clear glass and sets upon a large enclosed cabinet, most likely for storing devotional items. High relief, gilt dry lacquer has been molded in scrolling floral and foliated patterns. Glass "gems" have been further inset into the design for even more opulent style. A pair of emerald green glass panels have been inset on either side of the mirrored central door...

Splendid Lanna Thai Wooden Buddha with original gilding seated on an elaborately decorated throne. Very serene/calm expression. The Buddha is seated in the Vajrasana position with the right hand in the gesture of touching the Earth (bhumisparsa mudra) and the left hand rests in the gesture of meditation (dhyana mudra). Exceptionally large and serene lacquer antique Buddha dressed in royal robes, intricately inlaid with inset flat glass/mirror mosaics backed with colored foil and further decorated with moulded relief work forming beautiful spirals.
