The word "Namban" comes from namban-jinou "southern barbarians", used by the Japanese to refer to the Europeans, especially the Portuguese. Namban art came about between 1500 and 1600. The Portuguese reached Japan in 1543 and forged a very intricate commercial relationship.
Initially, the Japanese weren't overly fond of the Portuguese...

Statue of Buddhist god Wenshu --- also known as Bodhisattava Manjusri --- in formal attire, wearing diadem and jewelry, his hands holding the stem of lotus flowers resting on each shoulder, sitting in "bhadrasana" on his lion, the lion itself crouching on a stylised lotus base. Bronze, with encrusted dark green patina. China, late Yuan/early Ming dynasty. Height: 18.8 cm. Very good condition.

A pair of Burmese wooden seated disciples, with calm facial expression, lacquered and gilded with inlay of colorful glass pieces on the borders of the robes, one of them sitting in adoration posture with two hands attached to each other indicating respectful manner. Traces of original lacquer and gilding remain in excellent condition.

This rare, delicate red ground gold threads kesi cover is decorated with a 5 claws dragon surround by sea waves, clouds, auspicious symbols and pair of bats. Beautiful Chinese antique tray made of intricately carved red cinnabar with carved black lacquer overlay, the red lacquer is carved in a tiny patterned background while the black lacquer is carved as a scene of scholars in a garden setting with black mountains rising on the other side of a carved cinnabar lake, the edges are carved with flowers and bats, stands on four small feet, late 19th century. This very fine Late 18th Century Ningyo was made for the Daimyo Class. These rare pieces are highly regarded in Japan. This is an unusually large Musha- Ningyo of the hero Kato Kiyomasa, who accompanied Hideyoshi on his campaign against Korea. He was famous for his bravery. He has a great face of carved wood and finely burnished Gofun, and is dressed in the sumptuous textiles of a rich green velvet coat with gold dragons...

Nobori banners, samurai Yoroi and Kabuto helmets, carps, musha ningyo (warrior doll) were all a part of the display used for Boy's Day (renamed to Children's Day) on May 5th in Japan. They reflect the parents’ wish to inspire their sons in manliness, discipline, bravery and the honor codes that are associated with them.

Authentic rare ancient Chinese, Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), silver – inlaid, thinly cast bronze, circular hand mirror. The front of the mirror is decorated with silver inlaid with three lotus leaf motifs near the outer rim; the inner site has remains of the silver plating.
CONDITION: In good condition considering its age, with beautiful green patina showing its age and usage. The mirror originally had a handle which at some point was broken off...

Lovely Song or early Ming Dynasty green glaze bowl. Nice symmetrical shape and thick glaze with crackling. No cracks, chips or damage. Diameter: 4.75 inches, height: 2 inches.

Late 19th Century Japanese cloisonne bronze charger with a flock of flying cranes. Beautifully designed, it measures 12 inches in diameter. There are a few stress marks in the upper left side, please study last photograph where I have enlarged and highlighted the area through photoshop. It is not as evident in person. Pricing has taken this into account.
