19th century Chinese scholar wooden brush rest in a shape of a mountain range with soaring peaks. Hardly any carving, perfectly captures the energy of the mountains. Three carved characters on the bottom that can be translated as WOOD & STONE RETREAT. Beautiful patina, traces of ink on sides and bottom, excellent austere object for a scholar’s desk. Late 19th century Japanese Bizen stoneware okimono modeled as meditating Daruma - the founder of Zen Buddhism - enveloped in his monk’s robe with a hood, his hands folded on his chest. Exceptionally rare small lacquered box from the Karen people of Burma. This is an antique piece circa early 20th century (possibly earlier). I have yet to find any other examples of pieces with the carved design on the bottom (either in the field or any published literature). There is some minor loss to lacquer to at the edge of the top.
