Late 19th century netsuke of a peasant seated on a bundle of firewood smoking a pipe and helping to light the pipe of the other man with a rain hat. Old loss to the smoking parts of both pipes, Very good carving, great faces, multiple inlays to their clothes. Signed CHIKUZAN on inlaid lacquer plaque on the bottom - there is an artist who signed with these characters listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 453, number 147), but I am not sure it is the one who carved this netsuke...
Two early vintage albumen prints, one showing a Japanese river landscape, the second one with a group of Western and Japanese men in a garden. Mounted on coeval cardboard. Condition: fine, minimally faded, the photo with the landscape with a tiny hole, the cardboard with two lost corners. Dimension: photo: c. 20.1 cm x 26.1 cm, cardboard: 34.8 cm x 43.8 cm.

A small but very attractive album leaf in ink and faint colors on silk depicting a scholar on an outing on a river or lake. Signed: Yue An zhu ren (Moon Hermitage Dweller). Dated gengshen = 1860. The style used is in imitation of the ‘dry or sparse ink landscape’ associated with the Yuan painter Ni Zan (1301–1374). Qing, mid-19th cent. H 23 cm, W 18.5 cm (picture frame). A cast brass gong mounted in a Japanese style wooden frame. The two parts were joined together in Singapore where the stand was constructed out of Vietnamese wuali wood. The stand measures about 27 1/2" wide x 23 1/2" tall x 11" deep and dates to the 1980s. The bell measures about 13" in diameter x 5" deep and dates to the 19th Century or earlier. The bell has a marking of "4-P" painted inside, and the gong comes with a matching quality striker...

19th century netsuke of an acorn on a branch with leaves on top of a pile of chestnuts.
