Late Meiji period (1890s to 1912) Japanese wooden kushi (hair comb) with gold lacquer decoration of various objects including an old tile and a samurai helmet among floweing plants, design continuing on the back. Beautifully made, very good lacquering with some losses and wear as can be seen on photos, losses to the tips of 2 teeth, wonderful work in Japanese taste. Length 4.04 inches.

Japanese antique two section large choba tansu (merchant's chest) from the Kansai area, made with hinoki (Japanese cypress wood) with a beautiful natural finish. The top section has sliding panels made with keyaki burl (elm) and 4 drawers. The bottom section has 3 large drawers and another set of sliding panels with horizontal slats. The fine crackle look with natural kiln vivid cracks gives the bowl an authentic wabi sabi feel.
Overall, it is a great example of an old, beautifully crafted Shino tea bowl.

Shino pottery is produced in today's Gifu prefecture since 16th century and it is distinguished by thick white glazes, red marks and the surface of small holes.

This is a great little Japanese satsuma vase. It is highly detailed and the 40 or so children are all very expressive. Amazingly the vase stands only 3 inches tall. This is truly a wonderful micro-detailed piece and I believe it was made with the beautiful and tough mercury fired gold. You will need glasses to appreciate all the fine detail. It is partially signed on the bottom and minutely signed in a banner held by one of the children...

Half cylinder shaped (Hanzutsu) tea bowl with a rounded brim, in the typical hand built style of the Raku family. The body is fully covered with a white engobe before the red glaze was applied.

Very rare, Gulong Miao children’s jacket from Guizhou. This is a side opening style, made from all hand woven cloth (except for the inner sleeve lining) with hand embroidered anthropomorphic figures, on a calendared greenish cotton ground. Small shrine with the sculpture of Kishimojin, the hands folded in prayer. Plain wood with nice patina, the pupils painted black. On the back inscription in black ink. On the right door of the case inscription in black ink: Angyo Kishimosonjin, the name of the temple and the donor. The inscription on the back of the sculpture is partly the same, indicating that sculpture and case came together. Japan, early 19th century.

Rare Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty Painted Pottery Horse & Rider

This rare and attractive pottery model of a horse & rider was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 386 - 534). It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of a white pigment on top of which are traces of red and black pigments. The horse stands upright with its head turned a little to its left. The rider's body is also turned to its left with the right arm raised; note also the detail of the rider's clothing...

Eight is an auspicious number in oriental iconography, associated with such groups of auspicious motifs as the Eight Precious Objects, the Eight Trigrams and the eight-fold path of Buddhism. She holds a lotus in her left hand symbolizing purity and ability to rise from the mud to transform into a beautiful flower. She stands on a stand of lotus pedals with large lotus leaves.
