An antique Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket in a stylized Baluster form with bi-color bamboo intertwined with mature bamboo featuring dark nodules in a diagonal cross-hatch pattern. Each square of the pattern measures 1 3/8" and they are not tightly woven though they are in scale with the size of the basket. Slightly distorted shoe shaped - Kutsugata tea bowl with a rounded brim, made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part.
In the style of Oribe-Kuro bowls the bowl was covered with a black glaze which was not achieved by hikidashi (pulling the red hot bowl from the kiln) but by adding cobalt the the iron oxide glaze.
