An identical set of dishes is illustrated in volume II of the Shibata Collection at page 272 no 714, there dated c.1680-1710. Their condition is good all the dishes show crazing to the glaze, two have a minute chip each to the edge. Similar shaped dishes have been excavated from the Sarukawa kiln at Arita...

This early 20th century large stone carving of a water buffalo cow and calf is 6 ½” high, 7 ¾” long and 4 ½” wide. It depicts a cow eating grass but feeding her youngster at the same time. The bodies of both calf and cow are finely incised to represent hair. It is in excellent condition.

Unusual 19th century Chinese soapstone double seal of rectangular section with two sides carved with sunken characters. Third catalogue photo includes images of both printing surfaces flipped left to right to show what the imprint of the seals will look like. Nice buff colored stone, crisp carving of the characters, old traces of red seal paste in the grooves of the characters, in excellent condition, very nice scholar’s object. A fine Japanese hirado porcelain okimono of a recumbent horse. The horse has a whimsical expression. Its eyes are left unglazed with blackened pupils, its unglazed teeth exposed in a wide grin, the corners of the mouth and nostrils pierced through. Touches of cobalt blue underglaze accent the hooves and snout of the horse. The base is impressed with maker's cartouche.

19th century wooden netsuke carved as seated Tanuki (badger) with its mouth wide open, beating with his paws on his extended belly as on a drum. In Japanese folklore tanuki is a notorious trickster: he drums with his paws on his large belly (tanuki no hara tsuzumi), imitating the sounding of gongs in temples and inns, and leading tired travelers astray in the darkness...

Chinese Jin Dynasty Painted Pottery Filial Piety Tile (AD 1115 - 1234)

This interesting and attractive pottery tile was made during the Jin Dynasty (AD 1115 - 1234) and most likely comes from Shanxi province. It depicts a scene from the story of the Aunt of Lu, one of the stories of the twenty-four paragons of filial piety:

A crusty wood fired Bizen dish with looping handle, one hemisphere rounded, the other pinched as if for pouring, dating from the Edo period enclosed in an ancient custom fit lacquered Kiri-wood box. It is 23.5 x 22cm x 12.5 cm (roughly 9 inches diameter, 5 inches tall) and is in surprisingly excellent overall condition, with a few nicks to the edge of the foot consistent with age. Evidencing the centuries, there is a loss near the handle to some thicker glaze encrustation...

Chinese Green Jadeite Jade Pendant, carved lotus flower shape with incised line of pedals, 1 5/8" wide 1 1/4" high, 1/4" thick, with natural infusions. Holes indicated that this piece was sewn onto the clothes, or attach to the larger piece of jewel items. The condition is good.

This is kanjin-sumo rikishi tsutsugaki nobori textile of the Edo era. It is very very rare textile. It has a thin stain. However, it does not stand out. It has slight damage. However, it is good condition generally. size:190cm x 41cm (74.8" x 16.1")

A fine and expressive carved stag horn netsuke of Shoki, The Demon Queller. Early 19th century.

Shoki is the Japanese styling of the Chinese spirit Chung Kui who protects households from malevolent demons. In this example the gifted carver shows Shoki studying closely, an off stage, mischievous oni whilst carefully hiding his Chinese sword close to his body.

Chinese sandstone carving of Buddha's head, a fragment from a larger statue. This buddha has delicate features and a beautiful expression with high arching brows over half lidded eyes and a slight smile. Hair is a series of continuous sweeping rows over a subtle cranial protuberance. Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577). Size of head: 12 1/2" high. Total size including stand: 18 1/2" high.
