Okutani Shuseki (1871-1936) was born in Osaka and lived in Kyoto for most of his life. His artistic lineage is among the very best. He, along with Yamamoto Shunkyo and others, studied under Mori Kansai, who was the pupil and adopted son-in-law of Mori Tetsuzan, who was one of Maruyama Okyo's best pupils. This is a set of woman's tobacco case and pipe case which are made of deer skin and has fine katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) komon pattern. The motif is pine needle. It has beautiful clasp of green bean motif which shows prominent craftsmanship in this age. The set also has a pipe, but it seems that it is not an original one as it is shorter than the case. 19th century. In good condition except for some patina. A finely crafted rush-seated mahogany chair made by the manufactury of Thomas Glenister (Temple Works, High Wycombe) for the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902. Condition: very good - very little wear and no repairs or restoration.

Antique Japanese choba tansu made of keyaki (elm) wood. The top portion has two small drawers. The middle portion has a compartment opened by sliding panels with horizontal slats. The slats are made of quarter sawn keyaki wood which dramatically accents the striped quality of the wood grain. Below this is a single large drawer. The hardware is made of iron and includes round lock plates.

Hanging scroll. Benzaiten mandala. The eight-armed deity, bearing arms and a coiled snake (the deity Ugajin) on her head, sits on a lotus-leaf-seat, flanked by Daikoku and Bishamonten. Before her are the 15 disciples, or jugo doji, above her the sun and the moon.
Ink, mineral colors and gold on silk. Japan, Muromachi period, around 1500.

A large Tahitian "black ocean pearl" oyster shell (Pinctada margaritifera) depicting a fisherwoman, finely carved in northern France or Belgium probably during the last quarter of the 19th Century. Condition: excellent - no damages or losses. 19.3cm (7.1 inches) high;17cm (6.7 inches) wide.

A beautiful Satsuma vase by Kinkozan, the foremost artist of the 'Golden Age' of Satsuma during the Meiji Period. In ovoid form with gorgeous relief butterfly and flower designs and a central band with floral rosettes on black. Kinkozan mark on base. Height: 12.5 inches, 31.5 cm; Circumference: 25 inches, 63.5 cm.

Antique Japanese two panel screen inlaid on both sides with mother of pearl and bone. The front has two beautiful scenes of birds and butterflies perched on flowering wisteria branches. The lower register has a phoenix and a dragon. The back side has scenes of butterflies flittering about. The lower region has panels of crashing waves.Meiji period, 1868-1912. It measures 37" tall 25.25" wide.

Chinese Glass Mandarin Hat Finial converted to lamp Finial, wrapped around with silver and gold color leafy shape band which is all original but bottom piece is soldiered to brass lamp adapter. The clear glass knob is 1 1/4" diameter.
