This bowl was wheel-formed and then pressed into a mold while still soft to create an octagonal form. The soft stoneware clay was then carved and impressed with a stylized chrysanthemum design, allowed to dry, and then covered with a slip of white liquid clay which filled the incising. An extremely fine NLB Newcastle light baluster wine glass with superb engraving of two clasped hands. Jacob Sang often used such a motif and the engraving is definitely of Sang quality, though, being unsigned, it is impossible to definitely attribute it to him. The pointed round funnel bowl sits atop a stem with a shoulder knop and a tear-filled medial inverted baluster knop. A basal knop is above the conical foot, which has a rough, snapped pontil.

An unidentified hard wood was used to carve this set of 4 matching wooden saucers. They would have been used for tea bowls and have traditional red/orange lacquer paint over a treebark carved pattern on the front surface. Each saucer was carved into a diamond shape with gently curved sides and are each was carved into a thin, shallow bowl shape. This is a rare and unusual set in very good condition.

Each piece measures 5 inches x 4 inches and 1 inch deep.

Yellow (or apricot yellow) robes could only be worn by the Emperor or Empress. The color has faded and changed to this current tan color. This fine silver wired 3" x 2.5" box is from one of the better studios. A single bird descends from a blooming prunus tree, the trunk of which extends down the front side of the box against a ground of blue so dark it appears black. The mounts are of silvered brass.

Condition: Good, there is minor scuffing to the bottom and an old repair to the upper left edge of the lid.
