From the CongJiang in Gui Zhou province, this drinking horn is carved from water buffalo. It is a thick (and heavier weighted horn) which, according to my Miao friends is considered an inferior horn. So, this piece would have been owned by a "Poorer" family. It is wonderful primitive art object with carvings that are full of symbols reflecting Miao culture and legends. The hole in the tip would have held a string or metal ring to facilitate hanging the horn...

Large Old (1940's) Chinese Wood Carved Quan Yin

The quan yin is 17 inches tall without base, and 6.5 inches wide.

It is in good condition with no repairs, except a chip at the edge of her robe and cracks (as seen in the photos).

Chinese glove puppet depicting a man with bright opera face paint and long beard that appears to be horse hair dressed in a heavily sequined pale yellow robe with red fur accents. The legs are covered in red and white checkered trousers. Painted wood face, shoes, and hands. Measures about 18" long. Possibly dates from the early 20th century. Very good overall condition with minor wear and soiling from use...

This Chinese pipe is from the Miao Ethnic Minority group in the vicinity of Rong Jiang. My Miao friends insist that this pipe would have been used for smoking tobacco and not opium. Made from silver alloy, the stem design has the two dragons chasing the center pearl.

The pipe is in very good condition and is 19" long and it comes with its own custom made stand.

Beautiful face of a court lady with natural wood patina with some dark marks suggesting that perhaps this mask has been cleaned. The hair is enhanced with black color (as it was when purchased in 2003) and grouped at the top of the skull in a bun. The interior shows the patina of an oxidized and weathered hardwood. Importantage at least early 20th, H 29 cm X 15 cm

Obviously these two masks from the Nuo theater belong to the minorities of southern China. They constitute a set probably designed simultaneously by the same artist. One of the masks represents the monk Heshang and the second represents the jester Quintong. These masks date from at least the middle of the 20th century, that is to say about a hundred years. A reddish-brown stained hardwood carving of the star god Shouxing holding his staff and accompanied by a boy holding a bat. This item was possibly made in China during the Republic period - circa 1920-1949. Condition - very good - there is some chipping and age related cracks (please see enlargements 6 and 8), but no losses to the figures...

A Chinese statue of a maiden holding a lotus flower and a fan, carved from celadon jade, fixed on a matching wooden base. Condition: fine, only lotus flower with few tiny rim frits. Dimension with wood stand: c. 22.3 cm high.

Chinese fan painting on paper by Zhu Meicun (born 1911) depicting a solitary figure at the lower right seated among rockery and pines. The left side of the fan bears the artist's signature and red seal. The painting is dated above the signature in Chinese cycle years summer of "ping xu" (1946). The fan painting has been silk mounted. The painting itself measures about 9 1/4"V x 20"H (mounting size: 16 3/8"V x 22 7/8"H)...

This is a charming lobed shaped tea-pot standing on four small individual feet. On one side it has a painting of a pair of sparrow in a blooming lotus pond. On the other side, it has a poem written on it. Circa. early Chinese Republic period 1940s-1950s.

No hairline crack, glaze fritting, damage, repair or restoration. The tea-pot is in good condition.

The dimension of the tea-pot: The height is 11.7cm, the length is 22cm and the width is 10cm.

A meiping shaped vase, well painted in under glaze blue and red. The base carries the six character mark of the Guangxu emperor (1875 - 1908)and was possibly made during his reign. Condition - very good - no damages and no restoration...
