Jurojin getting an earful; a humorous image by Suzuki Shonen showing the elderly god having his ear cleaned by his companion, the long lived crane. It comes enclosed in a double wooden box annotated by Konishi Fukunen (1887-1959) and bears a label from the Daimaru Department Store. Fukunen was one of Shonens most famous pupils. The ink and light color on paper image is bordered in a superb brocade mounting with solid ivory rollers...

This is a pair of famille rose in pastel colour and floral design tea-cup. The inside of each tea-cup has a slightly flared top and has a barbed shape rim surrounded by an intricately designed inter-connecting miniature iron red colour ruyi head...

Decorated with a qilin in the center and floral scroll in the exterior. W=19 cm. Early Ming 1368-1398. Condition :Fault firing, no chips, cracks or hairlines and free from restorations.

Fine Large Chinese Han Dynasty Glazed Hu Jar with Hunting Scene

This fine and attractive pottery jar (hu) was made during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is made from a fairly high-fired reddish pottery and coated in a very finely-crackled glaze of unusual colour varying in places from green to a yellowish-brown...

One of the most interesting vases I have seen by this potter, quite striking in appearance, with brick colored dashes struck briskly through the dark molasses of the vase. Under the glaze we can see the artists signature Jomon rope impressions pressed into the clay. The Jomon pattern (the Jomon were ancient peoples of Japan whose pottery was typified by rope impressions) is what Tatsuzo is most famous for...

Ge type golden celadon glaze covering foot rim. Broad firing ring on base burnt red. Diameter = 12.2 cm Period : 14 th-15 th Century Longquan Kilns, Zhejiang Condition : no chips, cracks, or hairlines and free from restoration.

A pleasure craft of solid burled wood covered in clear, black and red lacquer with inlayed mother of pearl designs which opens up to be a picnic box. The fore-peak is removable and opens to hold chopsticks. The upper cabin is a sake bottle, the roof a large plate, the the lower cabin food and rice storage. The aft holds 6 small plates, and the structure all can be removed to reveal the food storage in the hold. It is roughly 20 x 8-1/2 x 11 inches (50 x 21 x 28 cm)...

A wooden sign of three golden characters carved into the surface of a solid slab of burled wood enclosed in a frame expertly carved with the four gentlemen, plum, bamboo, iris and chrysanthemum. It reads Yuraku-sai, A Place of Playful Enjoyment. The sign (with frame) is 11-1/4 x 21 inches (28.5 x 53 cm). It is signed Setsuyo (?) followed by two stamps. There is a chip into a hollow in the wooden plaque, lower left (see photos) otherwise is in excellent condition...

A small statue of a dancer in traditional costume, finely cast and cold-worked in bronze and fixed on the original wooden stand. Such small bronze figurines were souvenirs and gifts from British Burma of the 1920s/30s. Condition: fine, only wood stand with some chips and traces of usage. Dimension: total height: c. 16 cm, base: 12.3 cm x 8.8 cm, figure: 12.5 cm high x 9.5 cm wide, weight: 1200 g.

A small Burmese Buddha made of silver. Its form is simple, unadorned and its hand is in the earth-touching gesture. The face has a wide nose with connected eyebrows and has a quiet presence.

Period: Burmese, 16th Century

Size: Height = 5 cm., Width at base = 3.5 cm.

Condition: Normal wear due to its age. Has a nice patina.

A cascade of flora drapes from the neck of this gorgeous piece by Seifu Yohei IV. It is 31 cm (12 inches) tall and in perfect condition. Quite large for a work by Seifu, it is marked on the base with an incised signature.
Seifū Yohei IV (Seizan: 1872-1946) was born the second son of Seifū Yohei III (1851-1914). He studied literati-style painting under Tanomura Shōsai (1845-1909), a son of Tanomura Chokunyū, in Osaka for three years...

A pair of ceramic Cormorants by preeminent early 20th century Master Miyanaga Tozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The cormorant has a special place in Japanese art. Like the hawk is a bird used in hunting, the cormorant is a bird used in fishing. A rope would be tied around the long necks of any number of the birds, them then taken out into the water with huge torches burning on the prows of the fishing boats...

“I am here” she whispers as the bespectacled gentleman pours the last drops from his bottle and says “I am going home”…a lithograph by Kei Hiraga numbered 50/120 and signed Key Hiraga ’88 with the artist’s seal in red. The paper sheet, matted and framed, measures 50.5 x 42 cm (20 x 16-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition. This is an superb example of his work, showing both his eros and playful nature in the abstracted figuration for which he is most remembered...

A very nice example jar decorated with lines of splashed iron spot. Qingbai glaze over a porcelain body. Jingdezhen ware, Song Dynasty 12th. century. H : 7.5 cm. Diameter : 12.5 cm. Condition : excellent glazed and splashed iron spot, 2 crack on the base, restoration to chip on the mouth rim.

Description:

A Longquan cup was rarely found with the original cap.
In light-tinted celadon hue(Fenqin), the ware was reflected with retrospective sheen in the glaze when darken firing effects were yielded on the body clay at the foot ring.
It was in very good condition with some crack lines observed in the cup and some imperfections of the glazing.

Date: Southern Song Dynasty, 1127-1279.
