This is an etching on paper, 7" by 6" (12" by 9 1/4" framed) by Tennessee born artist JAMES CARL HANCOCK (1898-1966), titled "THE GATE OF THE LIONS NEW ORLEANS LA." at lower right and signed in pencil below and dated there 1939. This is a view of old French Quarter New Orleans by a talented etcher. Hancock was self taught and in 1938 a book of his etchings, drypoints and sketches was published. Known works today include scenes of Memphis, New Orleans, and Arkansas. This example is apparently...

Charles F. Daubigny, French, 1817-1878, "Le Gue," Etching and drypoint, image size 9 7/8 x 13 3/8 inches, 1865, IV/V, Melot D.118, printed at bottom margin "Daubigny Sculp." l.l., "Sarazin imp. Paris" l.r. and titled "Le Gue" l.c., framed. This was Daubignys' third contribution to the "Societe des Aquafortistes", also exhibited at the Exposition Universelle", the world's fair of 1867.

This large print is an etching on paper in dark brown ink, and a heavily inked example at that, the subject apparently "Turkish Cemetery", according to a pencil notation in the upper left margin. Measuring 19" by 20" inside the mat (28" by 28 1/2" as framed), the work is signed in pencil in margin at lower left with the distinctive signature of the noted English modern art figure FRANK BRANGWYN (1867-1956). Brangwyn was a unique figure in British art, not easily categorized stylistically, but...

The drypoint measures 15X12 inches, printed on a medium weight, watermarked, laid type paper. very fine condition, a rich impression showing a velvet burr of ink throughout the figure. This drypoint is clearly signed in pencil by the artist lower right border.

Warren Davis, American, 1865-1928, "Seated Nymph," Etching, image size 8 x 5 3/4 inches, pencil signed l.r. "Warren Davis" on wove paper. Davis studied at the Art Students League in New York and became known for his etchings of idealized female figures. Many were used on the covers of Vanity Fair and Life magazines. Later in his career Davis exhibited in Europe and the United States including the Pennsylvania Academy and the Salmagundi Club.
