Oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (45" by 33" as framed in wood), the subject a wicker chair draped with lacy cloth, a painting in the background and tea pot at right, signed with what appears as "Egeun" at lower right and dated 82. A Greek-speaker emailed me to inform me that the signed name is, in Greek, "Eleni" (Greek for "Helen"). This is a bright, contemporary painting in really excellent, fine wall-ready condition.

Oil on canvas, 27" by 39" (32 1/2" by 44 1/2" as framed), the scene a deep blue lake with small boats and a dock, puffy clouds filling the sky on a peaceful summer day. It is an expansive scene, large enough to invite the viewer to feel he is a part of it. I suppose the work is Swedish or Danish. The artist chose to sign with just the conjoined initials "HM" at lower left, where it is also dated 1948...

Oil on canvas, 25 1/2" by 18" (32 1/2 by 24 1/2" as framed), apparently unsigned, circa 1930 to 1950, and very probably European (French or perhaps Scandinavian, judging from the stretcher). The painting is something of a mystery, the mysterious hand and spectacles at lower left coming from outside the image area. Almost certainly this was created by a listed artist but without a signature I cannot go further on that front...

Oil on canvas, 15 1/4" by 18 1/2" (22" by 25" as frame), the subject a copper or ceramic tub filled with red flowers , all against a simple background. The painting is not signed on the front but on the reverse is "Yerda Werkel" and "von Kurtz" and "1.9.46". So we have likely a German, Swiss or Austrian artist who would have painted this soon after the end of the war. I don't see a listing for the artist but she was talented...

Oil on burlap type canvas, unframed, 29 1/2" by 15", signed at lower right "BEKE", date circa 1950's or early 1960's most likely. The scene is a classic Mediterranean coastline in Italy or Spain, or, just a generic Mediterranean scene conceived by the artist. I don't see a listing for this artist so am offering this as a decorative piece. It is soiled, and would brighten substantially with a professional cleaning.

Old impressionist oil on canvas laid on wood board painting of a typical Dutch scene with windmills, boats, and a waterway, 9" by 11 1/4" (13 1/2" by 15 3/4" in 20th century frame). There does appear to be a signature at lower left but despite my best efforts I am unable to determine that name...

Large oil on canvas, 52 1/2" by 37", unframed, the name "SERGEI BORISOV" on the canvas overlap, the subject a scene of Cold War era Russia. There is much going on in the image, which is an idealized urban, industrial landscape. The Russian is difficult to translate (I have been helped by a friend who reads Russian), even to a Russian speaker/reader, but the gist of what is being said is that the proletariat and workers must prevail all together to work for the Communist ideal...

Oil on canvas, 27 1/4" by 39 3/4" (32 1/4" by 44 3/4" with modern simple frame), signed at lower right by the artist and penciled notations on the stretcher as well, the subject most peaceful, consisting of a small pond with ducks and rowboat in a clearing, painted early in the 20th century by the noted Scandinavian artist OTTO PETERSEN BALLE (1865-1916). Balle's works are held in many collections in Denmark, and some especially fine examples have sold at auctions, one at Sotheby's...

Oil on board, 13" by 17", unsigned, the subject a group of European-looking (French, I'd guess) buildings that appear as if they would belong in a country winery scene, with an early spring impressionistic landscape surrounding them. The conical tops remind me of structures I have seen in California wine country, or, in French chateau country. This one is difficult to describe adequately...

Oil on canvas painting of the streets in the oft-painted Montmartre section of Paris, 18" by 24" (25" by 31" framed), signed at lower right by the noted well listed French naive artist LOUIS PEYRAT (1905-1999). This is a classic scene that reminds of Maurice Utrillo, who, I read online, was a cousin of Peyrat (one painting in the auction record featured as its subject matter Utrillo's house). The muted color palette lends an austerity and understatement to this fine work...

Oil on canvas, 21" by 15 3/4" (24" by 19 1/2" as framed), unsigned, the subject an Austrian, Swiss, or German village in deep snow on a brilliant sunny day. The sharp peak in the background center could be the Matterhorn, in which case we could assume the subject is Zermatt, Switzerland. I'd guess the age of the work as circa 1950's. Oil on rough weave canvas scene of figures in a hazy landscape, 15" by 30" (20" by 35" framed), signed at lower right by English-born artist who later came to be more closely associated with Ireland, ANTHONY "TONY" KLITZ (1917-2000). This work, dating to 1975 as we see from a reverse copyright stamp of the artist, is rather typical of the artist's style. He used generally a soft impressionist style with generally restrained colors, along with much neutral space, punctuated by small bursts of i...

Affixed to the reverse is a typed 20th century label which reads "A small church in the south of France as painted by Lily Vosburgh in the 1930's", and below that "JB" AND "$22.50". Small oil on canvas laid on board painting of a street scene in Paris, the work somewhat resembling the familiar paintings of A. de Vity. It measures 15" by 11" framed and is not signed. Paintings of Paris streets are ever-popular. A ballpoint pen date on the reverse backing paper (3/24/72) gives some insight into when this painting was created. See other Parisian views in my shop.

Oil on canvas painting of a scene in central Paris, including the Galleries Lafayette department store, signed at lower right by listed French artist V. GERNON. This mid 20th century work is painted in an impressionist style. The balanced composition, muted colors and flickering brush strokes make for a very attractive work. Note the many figures and rich architectural detail. Measurements are 24" by 30" (31" by 37" framed). The frame is attractive and likely the original, though it has som...

Lovely antique oil signed at extreme lower right corner by the Dutch master artist JAN JACOB COENRAD SPOHLER (1837-1923), the subject a classic canal in summer, the scene including windmills, boats, houses, churches (Utrecht, Leiden?) and tiny figures. The work measures 8 1/2" by 13 1/2" (10 1/2" by 15 1/2" in older 20th century frame). The work is very typical of his paintings, many of which show ice skaters in the winter. Larger works have reached $40,000 at auction in the Netherlands. Spo...

Oil on canvas of what would appear to be a domestic family scene, measuring 28" by 31 1/2", unframed, signed at lower left in capital letters "GUYARD". There does not appear to be a listed artist who could be associated with this name, despite the fine skills demonstrated by the artist. English circa 1850 landscape oil painting of a castle (the shape suggesting often-painted Windsor Castle) topping a low mountain, two tiny figures in the foreground. The work, 16 1/2" by 22" (19 1/2" by 25" in frame that appears "married" to it, and not that successfully, at that) is very, very grimy. This is a restoration project----to remove the dirt of 150 years, repair several small tears, and varnish the dry surface. There is no signature visible. This is certainly a painting the cleani...

Oil on canvas scene of two white swans in a small lake or pond in a rural area, 24" by 16" (29" by 21" in wide newer frame), signed in red "W W Caffyn" at lower right and dated there "96". This is a work by the noted British artist WALTER WALLOR CAFFYN (1845-1898), who exhibited at the Royal Academy. His paintings tend to be rural scenes of Sussex, Kent and Yorkshire. An impressive oil on Masonite landscape painting, unframed, 26" by 33", signed at lower left twice, by listed Swiss artist MAX EMANUEL HUBER (1903-1987). The work clearly shows the influence of Cezanne's fractured planes technique. Huber executed a number of impressionist works, and some have this more modernist technique, with which he clearly experimented. The artist is sometimes mixed up with Swiss modern artist Max Huber (1919-1992); the latter's paintings are much more abstract and conte...

Oil on canvas, 18" by 22" (23 1/2" by 27 1/2" as framed), the subject the famous Paris opera house and the Cafe de la Paix at left, executed in the naive style of painters like Emile Blondel, Leon-Alphonse Quizet, and so forth, apparently unsigned, though the word "Lancel" on an awning could possibly be the artist's name. The painting dates to the post war period, likely the 1950's or early 1960's at latest, considering the style of the autos in the scene. The artist most definitely had a comm...

Oil on canvas, 18 1/2" by 15" (23 1/2" by 20" as framed), the subject a vase of flowers painted in a highly impressionistic manner. The painting is signed in a manner consistent with the notoriously difficult to decipher signature of the artist HENRI d'ANTY (1910-1998) at lower right. The age would appear to be circa late 1950's or early 1960'a. Castaneda studied art and won awards there as early as the 1960's; solo exhibitions of her work began in 1973 and continue to recent years, in numerous European venues, as well as in America. I have not found a listing for such a name, even when varying the letters a bit. A circa 1970 painting of a plaza in Paris, 22 1/2" by 26" in silver and black framing, signed at lower left with what appears as "Lietti". The work is in the style of many of the Montmartre tourist painters of the time, but is unusual in that it is painted in grays, blacks, white, and a grayish tan at far right.
